So i got a call from my little brother, still living with my parents. He was playing MW2 on Xbox live. One of his friends from school joins his xbl party, and says "Hey Luke, I'm going to shut down your internet." My brother being a cocky son of a bitch says "Do it you fag." Cuz there's not way in hell he could do that, right? Wrong. ![]() He lags out of MW2, can't connect to xbox live. He goes to the computer, no internet there either. How the FUCK could someone do that, and how do I fix it? |

Im no hacker but DOS Denial of service can be done with broadcasting the hell out of a switch (routers dont forward broadcasts). If the guy just set up a super wammy ping I would think you could grab a new IP by unplugging the modem/router or by release/renew command.
Im about a week from taking my CCNA and really havent spent much time with the MS hacking stuff. |

I'll have him reset the router, the only problem is that we have comcast and tv and phone come thru that so it has a battery back up. will it still work even if it doesn't power down complete, just reset from the little button on the back? Yeah the reset button should do it (if thats what it is) |

Fire up Wireshark on a pc, look at the current interface, if you're being DOS'ed locally you should see the traffic flood. If not and you still aren't getting service it's probably targeting the router above, time to call COMCAST and see if they can see it./block it. (Nice part is that if the idiot is recognizable by the ISP a nice abuse letter could be fired off BY THEM to his ISP for action.) |

Quoted: He called comcast this morning, they fixed it within minutes. They didn't say what had caused it. I don't know what causes it, but back in COD4, people used to get pissed when I spanked their ass. I got kicked off a couple times. Just had to reset the modem/router and I was good. |

Ehh, if you have remote access on your router, and the default login data, someone can go into the router, turn of DHCP, and reboot the router. I have seen this done with a linksys.
No idea why the guy enabled remote access, but still had the blank login with admin as the password. |
