I need a good long gun safe for under $500 if thats possible. Basiclly I can't drop a grand on a safe right now and I need some security. I live in a townhouse I rent so no permanent fixtures. I saw some inexpensive ones at Dicks sporting goods, but they were all key operated. I am looking for a dial combination lock. Some place in VA would be ideal. As usual thanks for looking.

You're looking for a cabinet at that price and you can find some with combo locks at the typical hunting good chain store.

The cheapest safes I've seen run about the price of a single good AR with a ten round magazine - $750 or so. The better firelined safes to hold 20 rifles (10 AR's) run about a grand to a bit more.

When I lived in apartments I had a couple of Homark gun [s]safes[/s] cabinets with lag bolts run into the wall studs and the floor. They are better then nothing and now I use them for optics, magazines, and ammo storage.

Someone posted about a decent apt. safe at Home Depot 'a sentry', 8/10 gun, I believe, at 299.00. I've seen them for 399.00. Do a search on the search function you'll get some ideas.

Hit the search button and type in "safe". Two good threads in the last week.

Sentry wins by a nose.

Menards and Home Depot are having a sale on Sentry 3920 safes right now for $299 and they are going QUICK.  I just bought one today. [:)]

Of course it looks like crap next to the Liberty Safe on display right next to it, but it's a huge step above the Stack-On cabinets that Wallmart sells.

It'll do if you're on a budget.

Walmart and K mart both carry the Sentry safes as well. Better than no safe, and much better than a Homack cabinet.

Went to Home Deopt today after seeing the thread. They looked at me like I was crazy , no safes carried at that location. DOH. What is Menards by the way.

Are the Home Depot safes fireproof?

I didn't see anything about fireproof for $3-400.00 it's not bad for security. I suggest buying it at Wal-Mart if your going to. I know they are pro-gun. Does any one know if Home Depot is?

1. Homeless Depot   about $300
2. Lowes      about $350
3. Wally world  $329.95 ( got mine here)
4. Sam's Club    In the $300 area

the above are pretty good Sentries and sound like what you want. They were on Christmas sales.

Dick's $379   A Stack On, but looked pretty good for the $.  Try and have your local Dicks do a product search and see if they can find one left over from the Xmas sale.
Wally world will also do a search if you ask.

There are two Home Depots here in Madison, neither had any more safes in stock.  After talking with several people I found out that Home Depot only carries gun safes during the Christmas season.

Menard's is a chain hardware store, similar to Home Depot.  http://www.menards.com/index.html  You can search to see if one is close to you http://www.menards.com/menards?mm_dest=%2Flocator%2Fstorefinder.jsp.  It looks like they only have stores in the midwest though, so you might be SOL.
