0000 steel wool , litely, with oil.
steel wool sounds like i'm kidding you, but it's the deal. i've had to do it myself, it works fine.
make sure it's 0000 and not brillo.

If it's blued, you can take a large rifle (7.62 will do) expended casing and beat the neck flat with a hammer. You are making a scraper out of the case neck.

Put WD-40 on metal, scrape rust away with shell casing, brass is softer than the steel and will not scratch the bluing.

Not sure if it will work with parkerizing or other coatings. None of my park'd weapons have ever rusted.

FYI, works better than 0000 steel wool and WD-40.

ETA: Must use a BRASS shell casing, not steel.

Brass is pretty hard.  An old copper wheat penny works great on a few spots..  Be sure to refinish with gun blue.

I use RB-17 and 0000 steel wool--followed with brake cleaner and then oil.

Flitz. You rub a tiny bit of on the finish and it will take out the light rust spots and also waterproof to prevent further rusting.

If you can find some, try bronze wool.

Same idea as steel wool, but bronze....  much softer than steel wool.

Can use it with Liquid Wrench,   Or Kroil.

Both should work and it's really hard to go "too far" with the bronze wool.

Just take your time.

Good luck !

I have heard they make bronze wool.  I haven't seen it.

I have also heard that you can use a penny to remove rust.

There is also sand blast and gun-kote.

Bronze wool, a penney or brass.  Nothing steel.  If its Parkerized, you will get metal blush from the bronze wool/penney/brass but this will come off with CLP or real bore cleaner.

Steel wool will remove bluing and Parkerizing.  Don't use it.
