Right now I use a G22 and G27 on an ankle, I love this set up because I can use the G22 mags in the G27 if need be. I'll soon be switching departments and will be issued the G21. I'd love to keep the versatility I previously had but don't think that's possible since the G21s counterpart, the G30 is a little on the hefty side for a BUG especially on an ankle where I like it. I could go with the G36 but it's a single stack and I'll loose the ability to throw in a mag from my sidearm, but if push comes to shove I could just strip the rounds and reload them.![]() Whata yall think, G30, G36, other? |

Stripping and reloading rounds take fine motor skills that you will loose in a high stress situation. If you have to reload your BUG, I'd call that high stress. Get the G30 so you don't have to worry about it. I carry my BUG on my armor carrier, you might try that. Get both and have the G36 on your ankle as a BU-BUG |

The convenience of sharing mags will have to be weighed against the bulk of the G30. I suspect that you won't be happy with the G30 as a BUG due to it's size. Depends on your body type and preferences, though. Remember, the G30 is just as fat as the G21, and quite a bit bigger overall than a G27. G36 isn't such a small piece, either. I have yet to hear of a bonafide account of anyone using their full-size mags in their backup gun during a gunfight. They are usually over way too quick. Where a BUG has the most utility is as a pocket gun. You can have your BUG in your hand and noone will ever know until after you shoot them. Hammerless J frame loaded with snubbie-specific ammo (Speer?) is about perfect for this. You could just keep the G27. Play with some options in person and see what you think. |
I never carried it as a BUG since I was always in and out of the jail and it was a PITA to keep dumping weapons in the lockbox and felt it would be a hassle. When I carried it off-duty it wasn't bad in an IWB holster. Just don't get the skateboard type tape grips on them. |
