I had an assortment of Visa gift cards, with varying balances, ranging from  91 cents to $50.
In the past, I've lost anywhere from a few cents to several dollars on expired gift cards, because it was just too much trouble to use odd balances. On a whim, I logged onto Amazon and went through my stack of cards, buying myself electronic Amazon gift cards. You can buy them for specified amounts such as $31.65, and even , yes, 91 cents, ending up with  an amount you can actually buy something with, and Amazon "cards" never expire.
Love my new router!

I write the balance on the back with a sharpie. Money is money, it isn't a problem for me, it just sucks for cashiers.

Yeah, I do that too, but I don't carry around a 1/2" stack of cards, and tend to forget about 'em after a while.
