Had this girl dropped off at my house, apparently she didn't do well with the kids of the original family, too rambunctious.

Loves to play fetch but doesn't like to share the ball or drop it.

I've trained them off and on for 25 years now and never tire of them. they are truly one of the special breeds. people who have never had them, will never know just how special they are.

They love their toys.  Mine loves fetch too but loves keep away more.  You have to have 2 to get her to drop it.

Fantastic dogs. Got the black one last year from a neighbor of my mother's who paid a ton of cash for him, then proceeded to leave him in the backyard by himself with little food and no attention for a year. He's an amazing dog and one of the best with people I've ever seen, but his complete lack of socialization his first year and his only previous experience with dogs being getting attacked and mauled by one when he was a puppy, he's got some dog aggression that crops up now and then unfortunately. Loves to fetch..will bring you his toy over and over again for an hour, and just lays it in front of you and nudges it with his nose until you pick it up.

On a side note... prior owner hated him because they were convinced he was retarded. Dog's one of the smartest I've seen. He unlatches the gate and his crate with his nose, and has figured out how to open doorknobs. Was an outside dog for a year and we housetrained him in ONE DAY.

Lol, came to post this.

OP, get two toys it really really likes. Throw one and hold the other. When it comes back, teach it to "leave it or drop it" and throw the other one. Rinse repeat.

My GSD was the same way, and still is to an extent. But we're to the point where he will to get what I threw, bring it back and place it in my hand so long as I have something else to throw.

This was Rio, one of my two GSDs.  She's passed on now.  She was a great dog, had awesome prey drive, which made it so easy to train her.

I found that the trick to getting the ball back is to have two. Throw one, he brings it back. when he sees the other one he will drop the first one, I throw the second one then I pick up the first one and repeat as necessary... Otherwise, he is all "Molon labe!" about the ball..

This is Sergeant. Holding security at the mall...

I used two tennis balls with my pup. She would drop whichever one she was holding to go chase the one I just threw. I would usually throw them in opposite directions so she could sprint further.

Mine is addicted to them. He retrieves better then my retrievers did. Just say the word "ball" and off he trots until he can bring one to you.

Would like to get another well bred pup.
My Golden Retriever is about 13 or 14 and acts older daily, will not make another year.

You're absolutely correct.

easy to teach them the "out" just trade treats for the ball while giving the command "out"

In my experience, the only thing this breed requires is to be brought up in a loving home
