Gentlemen, I am in the market for a GPS. I was looking at:
Garmin etrex 20
Am I missing some new hotness? I would like MGRS as well. |

I have the Garmin GPSMAP 62ST does a great job for all my uses.

I use this app on my old G4.

Actually mine is mounted to the dash of my side by side, it can use road maps, custom maps, birds eye maps, and yes basecamp works just fine. |

It will do road routing if you have the maps. you can import routes from basecamp. It also recieves GLONASS, not just GPS. |

I just got 2 - Etrex 30x's. I have only unboxed one of them. Got for a Royal Ranger group at the church. I was just out again today and set 6 waypoints. When returning to the spots it was anywhere from 30 to over 100 feet off. Also the tracking on the map is wacko. A lot of what I did today was on tram roads. So, when backtracking the same routes you would think it would be nearly the same but it would show a different track as much as 50 feet left or right of the original track. I paid $199 for the bundle pack on sale from Cabelas early December. They are going back the first of the week. To me they are worthless. I can use a map and compass and get almost as close.
I had a couple of the regular Etrex 30's back in the spring last year. I had almost identical issues with them. I was told the x model was newer and better but I guess not. Not sure what I'd get but I would not recommend and Etrex |

I HATE when people use them to set a geocache because you are going to have one hell of a hunt if its a small on in brush. |

My GF just bought me a Garmin Foretrex 401. Its super compact and seems like it will work just fine for point A to point B stuff and get me outta a jam if i get turned around hiking. Ill probably grab one of these as well. You know, get both. What he said. I have a Garmin e-something and a nicer Garmin color version that my wife wanted for I dunno... reasons. I just use the Foretrex, it's money. |

You can get free, open source street and topo maps, that in many cases are BETTER than Garmin's from OpenStreetMap |

I just picked up a Garmin 64S after having spent a good chunk of this week researching them.
I went with the 64 over the etrex line for a couple of main reasons. 1: Buttons. The 64 uses a number of them vs the etrex joystick. I expect the buttons will be easier to work in gloves and well, it gets cold up here. 2: larger screen 3: better antenna 4: more built in storage The etrex has longer battery life, is smaller and a bit less money. I've started messing around with it but haven't yet had a chance to use it in the field. I'll know in a month or so if it was a good choice. |
| Oregon 450 will do all you want. get the 24K topo download for free, then you have to buy the birdseye maps. PM me if you need help setting it up. I use mine to mark property lines for logging. I get property maps and overlay them in base camp then upload to the handheld. All I have to do is follow the line on the display and spray the trees along the property lines. |
