Can anyone recommend some good software for creating .gif files from videos?

I was going to make this a separate topic, but might as well toss this in here too. Anyone have a good FLV converter? I have one, but it seems to only work with videos from Youtube, Liveleak, and once in a while I hit another one that works. But frequently if I use Firefox's Download Helper to download an FLV from any other site, the converter won't accept it.

i use youtubedownloader for converting flv files. works with any flv file that i have tried.

don't know about making gifs from movie files, but i used gif movie gear back in the day to create some animated gifs

I downloaded this:

...for creating .gif files from videos. But it costs $20 to register. So before I do that, I just wanted to see if anyone knew of a free one or one that has been time tested to work.
