I need a new computer or tablet. My current laptop is old, slow and worthless.
My primary uses for it are web surfing, web shopping, forums etc. I would like to be able to use it to store pictures and videos which means I need some hard drive space I guess. I want it to be fast and quickly boot up and be ready to use. I'd prefer the use of a keyboard when needed but like the functionality of a tablet at times too without the keyboard if not typing much....not sure i there is a hybrid of tablet/laptop Tablet, Chromebook, traditional laptop? Budget is not really an issue providing I find what I need......obviously not looking for a tiffany and co edition laptop
What say you? |

What say you? Your budget is going to decide what you can get. An Acer Chromebook for $200 cannot be beat. Mine comes in tomorrow. However there are many better options if you want to spend more. Lenovo has some laptop/tablet hybrids that are decent. A Microsoft Surface 2 would also fit with what you are looking for. Apple makes good stuff too but you will pay a slight premium for the logo. Decide on budget, size, and OS and I could give you some more specific recommendations. |

Photo storage and internet surfing would be my primary uses, although I have a backup hard drive that I store pics on as a safety measure so wouldn't need too much space on the new laptop. I'd like to be $500 or less for what I need it for. I don't see the point in spending $2G's to surf the web. OS, I'm not really partial to any. I have used mostly windows based and have an iPhone so familiar with those. Not much of an android fan, just wasn't familiar to me at all and found it hard to get used to. Size isn't really an issue. Would prefer a screen 10" or more but don't want something too huge either. 10" to 15" at most. |

I think it was a color printer, an ipod touch, and a macbook pro for like 1100. Worth every penny in my opinion. Never crashed, great preloaded software, solid build quality. I put an ssd and 8 gigs of ram and mine screams. Opening imovie is like maximizing a window. |

If you have an Android smartphone, set up your phone to upload all pictures you take to the cloud.
Buy an Asus Chromebook for $199 Surf, buy stuff online, and visit forums to your hearts content. Right click any photo online and save it to your online google drive. Take the $800 you save on a Macbook and buy ammo. |

DO I need to pay extra for online google drive storage? Is it per month? google drive is ok , Box.com is great , there are many . Don't put anything of exceptional privacy out there in the cloud though. I use a separate home storage device, from synology , a 4 bay NAS box that was about 350$ but hold 3 terabytes of data and is a raid. |

first, I am an MCSE. I love Microsoft and they make a lot of nice products.
that being said, my Macbook Air is the best computer I've ever owned. Hands down. I work in the IT industry and use a lot of different laptops. My current "work" rig is a MacBook Pro Retina 15" with 16 GB of RAM and an otherworld computing 1TB drive on board. It SCREAMS. It's more powerful than my macbook pro, but it was a lot more expensive as well and I use it for virtual machines and other memory/chip intensive apps. for day-to-day business use and personal use, Macbook Air is *amazing*. I do a lot of photoshop Lightroom on my MBA and some light video editing and while it's not quite as fast as the MBP, it's still faster than any of my comparable spec'd windows machines. |
