I've gotten really bored with IT work so I applied for an internal company transfer to go back to engineering.  An offer came through this morning and will be formally sent to me next week.

Current job:

deadend IT admin job, learning nothing, I'm eligible for retirement and could probably get another job pretty easily here in Seattle.  Commute about 1/2 hour, 10 miles through heavy traffic.  Barely anything to do and oncall 50% of the time.  Near restaurants for lunch, near stores for errands.

New job:

30 miles away in light traffic, a 45 minute commute.  Project management/project engineering with some control/automation hands-on.  Large, complex equipment.  Middle of nowhere.  Will be much busier and will have to re-learn a lot of stuff I used to do.

Complication:

I'm running for state legislature in a district that includes half of downtown Seattle.  The primary is 8/5 and there's a decent chance I'll survive to the general.  The additional commute time and remoteness will definitely cut in to my campaign time.  A new job will take a lot more mental energy.  Going to an early afternoon event would be much more difficult.

I can go with the boring slack current job and coast along or I can take the new job and expect a lot more work until things get under control.

WA state needs conservative (or libertarian - anything but LIBERAL) legislators. Do whatever it takes to win.

I'll see if I can set my start date until at least after 8/5.

If you win the general how will you juggle your job and time in Olympia?

Various alternatives:

1. retire

2. leave of absence

3. WA is part time legislature, company treats it like jury duty, but this has been exercised rarely if ever.  If it ever did happen, I don't recall any examples.

4. It's pretty unlikely I'd win the general in a traditionally strong D district which is however composed of many value-conservative minorities.  Spoke with an Ethiopian immigrant two nights ago whose been in the US long enough to raise kids to college age.  Conservative absolutely.  It was a great discussion in his living room.

The conversation you need to have (IMHO) is with your employer! If he is on board with your politics and can delegate some of the new job's work when you need to be away ......take the new job FTW!! If he is a pinko liberal, then F him, retire and  be a conservative legislator like none before you.

Since you are eligible for retirement at your current job, I'd stick with it and focus on the election and really hard on hunting and fishing with the grand kids.
