So I'm looking at either a G19 or a P228 for my next concealed carry gun.
The only Pro's the P228 has is the decocker, and the fact I have a bunch of 18 round P226 mags that will work with it.

So my question is, you guys that carry Glocks, do you chamber a round before you carry? Or keep a full mag/empty chamber?

I'll be carrying in wasteband, about 3-4 o clock.

Carry in a quality holster in said waistband, full mag, loaded chamber.

I carry my G19 at 3-4 o'clock in a OWB Blackhawk leather pancake holster. Condition One, full mag + spare mag on opposite side at ~9 o'clock.

This.  G19 every day, chambered in a leather OWB holster.

If you carry any gun without one in the pipe you should just carry a sharp stick.

The grip angle between these two pistols is noticably different- have you tried them both and shot them?  If there is no significant "fit" issue between the two for you, which is WAY more important than a decocker and mag issues, then you are in a very small minority.

When I carried a Glock, either a 22C at work or a 19 on my own time, there was always-always-always one in the chamber, with a topped-off magazine right behind.

G19 full mag & one in the pipe.  Sounds like the Raven Vanguard 2 was made for you.  I love mine.

Now, I don't have a 226 or 228 to compare to so it may be different with them,  but I have a G19 and a Sig Sauer SP2022.  I find both guns to fit my hand well and have no problems shooting either of them accurately.

I just recently picked up the 2022 so it has some more range time due to it before it becomes a carry piece, but once I wring it out some more, get used to shooting DA/SA and get a holster for it, I have a feeling it will be carried with some degree of regularity.

Never carry a "carry gun" without having a round in the chamber. Never.

Full mag, loaded chamber in a quality holster.  I can't figure out reason to do anything else.  Sig's are good enough guns, but I prefer firearms where the trigger pull doesn't change from pull to pull.

Deffinitely one in the chamber.  Make sure you have a good quaity holster, be vigilent on safety and get some training.

I have both...I love shooting the P228 much more than the G19.  I prefer carrying the G19 way more than the P228.  P228 is more accurate for me and feels way better in may hand.  G19 is much lighter and easier to carry.

I carry both and keep a round chambered.

Wilderness Instructor 5-stitch belt, Comp-tac MTAC holster, 15+1, and a spare G17 mag.

and eventually, I'm going to get a 4th gen because I'm a lefty and I like the changeable mag release.

Always carry chambered.  W/o ammo it's an expensive fragile club.

The classic models are indeed quite different in the hand than the SP series- I've got multiples of both exact models the OP is looking at. For most people who point a P228 naturally, the G19 will point high.  For most folks who point a G19 naturally, the P228 will point low.  YMMV

Reliability being paramount in a SD pistol, both the P228 and the G19 are good choices in that regard.  But for me, the second is "shootability" and that is not an issue to be determined without, well, shooting them both.  The G19 is undoubtedly more "size efficient" and easier to carry, but I carry my 228 nearly every day without issue.

The one-in-the-chamber issue is a no-brainer, as nearly every other post has already hammered on.

Yep.  Why carry a weapon that is not ready to fire, and that pretty much needs two hands to operate?
8/24/2012 11:35:32 AM EDT
[#21]
The Glock is practically impossible to fire unless the trigger is pulled.  Same like any quality made gun.

So keep the trigger protected.  Keeping it holstered makes it easy.

If you get the Sig DO NOT thumb down the hammer.  ALWAYS use the decocker.  Using the decocker engages the safety feature so it won't fire if dropped.  Thumbing the hammer down doesn't engage the safety feature and the gun can fire if dropped.

Sig now covers this in their owner's manual in a couple of places, but just in case you don't read it thoroughly or get a used gun without the manual, now you know.
