Went to pick up a newspaper this morning and caught this little bugger crossing the road. This little snapper still can do some damage so you better keep your fingers away. At least the cat was smart enough to check it out from the rear. I return him to the canal he came out of. Hope to see him in 5 years for a good dinner pic.

The cat gets the internal organs, I get the meat.

Kroger used to sell turtle meat in a can. I have not seen it in years though. If I come across it again I will prolly try it.

What is nice about where I live is that you can find plenty of food crossing the road. I can also walk down the street and catch fish. With my canoe I can run a couple of crab traps and catfish lines. If I turn my backyard into a veg garden then I will be good to go. If I was to pick blackberries, homemade wine. The only problem where I live is the hurricane season.

snapping turtle is pretty good.  my dad and I caught and farely large one a few years back and decided to cook it.  he had done it a lot before (his family was very poor) but it was my first.   we boiled water in a large wash tub and dropped him in alive similar to how one would cook lobster.

the craziest thing was after he was dressed.  for a good 30 to 45 minutes, the heart sit there on the riverbank still beating.  nothing at all there but the heart and it would still beat if you touched it for probably an hour after that.

anyhow, the meat was pretty good.  reminded me of a chicken thigh...  very dark meat.  it would take a good size turtle to feed just one person though, not much meat in em.

How we would do it is to make the snapping turtle grap hold of a stick and pull on the stick to strech out his head and neck. Then we would cut off his head with a sharp cane knife. Dress out the turtle for the meat, make a turtle sauce picante and then you will marry the first cajun girl you see.

My dad has one in his garage but the case is white, not blue.
