Customer bought this cheap.  Its a 1942 Chevrolet pick-up,  350-350 and mustang two front suspension.

We get to un-fuck the previous owners stupidity on this old girl.

It really is a fairly straight truck with some minor metal work issues,  but absolute shit paint and sub-par body work.

The mustang two front end looks to have been installed well enough,  The steering rack was installed with the wrong hardware and had a load of slop.  The rear shackles are,  um....Atrocous.  We milled some new ones and I will re engineer that tomorrow time if I feel like working tomorrow.  LOL

The transmission mount will have to be re engineered to drop the trans down a bit to align the drive line.  The previous owner installed the wrong u-joint (caps too small),  so how else does one fix it?   Wrap the caps in electrical tape and put it together!

I would love to own this old girl and properly restore it.  It is a great base to start with.

'42's are rare!

My dad has three 1941's.  One longbox with heavier springs, one shortbox, and one panel.

The panel is unfinished. I really want that to be my project someday.

Did a little more work on it today,  and my buddy took it around the block.  Drives good and is much safer than the absolute cluster fuck that was on it.

This is what we cut from the frame!!!

After cleaning and reworking the piss poor welds we began making the new shackle mounts and shackles.  The bushings were shortened on the lathe for the job.

How many of those were made during the war? I was thinking they stopped on vehicles for the war effort.

Not many for civilian consumption, most than were sold had painted grille/bumper, so that truck is rare with bright grille/bumper.

Not a new grille.  Whether is was re chromed or not?  I don't think so.  It is what you would expect of an old car grille.  It is cast metal and does have wear and weathering on it.

IIRC the ARMY truck grilles were stamped steel.

Reminds me of the first rod I ever owned. 42 Chevy truck in red primer. Welded in some mounts for a 318 and a Torqueflite. Stock suspension and a wood bed that looked more like a couple of park benches screwed together. 16 year old kids dream truck.

Its a 30-30 paint job.  it has some runs that were not sanded out properly in places and poor adhesion in other spots.  Finish sanding work is horrible.

Awesome project! Came very close to getting a '51 Dodge several years ago-free. Cousin's friend had it on a farm, had been his grandfather's. Typical barn find-lots of surface rust, little to no paint. But no holes and glass intact, and the engine ran. I asked if his dad would be interested in selling it, he was going to give it to me just to get it gone.

Then someone showed up and offered him $500 for it. Money in hand, bye-bye truck. I've wanted a project ever since.
