What idiot came up with a design that you have to compress the magazine inward to get past two locking tabs?

Brand new mag, follower was bound up and wouldn't budge. Figure I'd take the mag apart. No problem, I've probably disassembled and reassembled more thn a thousand mags for various firearms. Depress the locking plate, go to pull off the mag floor plate. Won't budge. OK, locking tabs. So I do a quick google to see if there is any trick. Yup, squeeze. Well I'm no weakling, but I do have arthritis. Can't get them to budge. Try using a pair of pliers, nope, won't budge. The pliers are leaving marks in the polymer, but the mag won't compress.

Any tips? Other than toss it, or see if Glock will replace it?

They made them tight so that they would not come apart. Now we get mad when we can't get them apart.

Try one of these.

Throw away, buy new mag.

Or call Glock and complain.

Or whine more on the inter webs.

One of the reasons i like the magpul Glock mags. They have a floorplate design similar to their AR PMAGs.

Are you guys sheering the locking tabs off in the process, because I pulled so hard on the locking hole with an Allen key that it's chewing pieces of polymer off.

I use a long skinny punch or screwdriver. I don't squeeze the sides, I just use the punch/screwdriver and push it all the way in and then push the floor plate off. The leverage of the punch all the way inside the magazine and I never have a hard time removing the baseplate.

Use a piece of cardboard so you don't mar up the mag.

Squeeze very hard in the very middle at the bottom and it comes right off. Your pliers need to be wide enough to get it properly, if they're undersized at all, they're worthless.

You have to make sure you pushed the floorplate retainer down far enough that it turns sideways inside the mag. I used to use the Glock tool for it, now I just use an allen wrench. And when it is sideways, push it up further even more.

I've taken apart several thousand and have to take apart a hundred today.

To the guys that haven't had problems, your mags were probably well used or older generations, those come apart pretty easy. New or only slightly used mags are a bitch to get apart.

You don't need to squeeze, just insert a steel punch in the hole on the bottom of the mag. With the short side facing you and use it as a lever and push. I do it at least 5 times a day at work and never squeeze anything.

with the punch in the hole push one of the back corners of the baseplate on a flat surface, like a table.

ETA: HERE is a short video making it clear.  NO NEED to squeeze the sides with pliers and risk deforming the metal lining.

I'm with you. As brilliant a design as the Glock pistol is, I can't imagine a much poorer design than a polymer sheathed magazine. He could have made the gun that much thinner, using steel mags.

It seems to me Glock pretty much builds the best mag. on the market.  I'd rather have a 100% reliable mag. that's a little hard to disassemble.  With a little practice they come apart very easy. I use a punch and a small screwdriver as a wedge on brand new ones.

The key is bracing the mag on a stable surface like a table edge overhanging the baseplate. Then use tool to push locking plate in and pry against mag wall. No pliers needed because you can distort the metal liner. I'd rather have mags that need to be popped apart and have readily available replacement parts than mags where the baseplates fall off under recoil like the early M&P mags.

Never had a problem. Just use the glock armorer take down tool.
If you go with Magpul - which are great magazines. Why not just buy the glock 17 mags and use them as reloads.
Are you taking down you magazines to add plus 2 floor plates to them?

If your hands are to weak to squeeze the mag. You can use a small clamp, preferably one tipped with rubber so as to not mar the mag body. Apply a little pressure not a lot.

The glock mag is superior to most other mag designs. The plastic outer body prevents corrosion and and floor plate won't come off if you drop it from a great height. It's supposed to not be too easy to remove.

Recall that the whole mag was supposed to just be all polymer body. The original idea was they wouldn't drop free If full. To me that is a smart idea that I kinda wish was retained.  But most shooters want drop free at any time mags, so glock actually responded to customer demand and changed it.

Yes the msgs are thicker than a typical steel only mag. But it isn't much and he glock frame is very thin in the mag well area (it bends at the end!)

Foolish to not have, if your a block owner.  I swear this is best thing since sliced bread. if your mags ever touch the ground they are dirty and that dirt WILL matter when loading. Take two mags,  clean one and one unclean load both you will be shocked with the ease of loading in the cleaned mag.
If you run and gun a glock YOU NEED this kit.
