That is a ugly fricking opossum.

That looks like a skittish dog.

Might be some Scot in there, too.

Maltese mix?
1/24/2012 9:10:13 AM EDT

Looks like a Maltese. You can do all of thee above. Craigslist ad first, then animal shelter. And flyers around where it was found and around your neighborhood?

WTF

It's another poop thread.

Take the dog to your local vet. They can scan for a chip -  for free (at least our vet does it for free).  They might also recognize the pooch. That's what we do when we find a dog or one finds us.

Good luck. It's a cute dog.

He looks like my stray, which I think is a schoodle or some other poodle mix.

There is not enough meat on that thing to feed a baby bird.

Part Maltese for sure. Maybe all Maltese, just a funky, not "AKC standard" bloodline
1/24/2012 9:18:53 AM EDT
[#13]
Shoot it.  The owner obviously has no right to a dog they can't control.  It's just a piece of steak, anyway.  In before the bleeding hearts who say return it.

Keep him if you don't find the owner. You'll both be glad.
1/24/2012 9:21:38 AM EDT

He is a maltese. A good dog. Smart as hell.
1/24/2012 9:22:10 AM EDT
[#17]
You might as well shoot him if your planning on taking him to the pound. He'll just be stuck in a cage for a couple weeks then "put to sleep".

It's a Maltese.  And not a terribly good example of the breed unless that's mud on it's butt.  Which is entirely possible because even though they're dainty little buggers they are still 100% dog.  My wife has two of them.  Soon we'll only have one because one of them is going on 13 years and is in rapidly failing health.  Some people breed them with other small dogs for some unknown reason and that may be where the brown came from.  Some times they just have a little caramel coloring and that's a fault.  Doesn't really matter as long as it's spayed/neutered.

Someone is missing it, that's for sure.  If not then they aren't really bad little house pets.  They're smart, not particularly energetic, and they make tasty snacks for your cat.  If you take it to the pound it'll be dead in a week, a long and miserable week.

That would be the exact opposite impression I have of a maltese.

We have one in the house, and it's sole purpose in life is to search for food, and sit on your lap.

Have it scanned. If there's no chip or tags, post on craigslist, pet finder, put up fliers etc stating you found a dog but don't give a description. Have the people responding to the postings ID the dog correctly to prove it's theirs.

So I may have found the owner but I have no real craigslist experience. Is there any way to contact the poster of this listing? Unless I'm blind there's no way for me to email them.

Unfortunately, the "send note" option just means that Craigslist will send them a form email saying "you didn't include contact information".  It doesn't allow you to enter information saying "I found your dog, dumbass, come and get it by Friday or I'll barbecue the little shit."

I don't know if there's a way to contact CL management, but you might try it.  They're hippies, so they might have a soft spot for this sort of thing.

Alternately, contact the media in whatever the town is.  Maybe they'll do it as a human interest story.

ETA: the ad says the dog was "lost" on 12/17/11, so over a month ago.  Plenty of time to wander 50 miles.

It wouldn't cost much for you to put Advantage on him. It sounds like the little feller needs it and it would keep him from spreading fleas in your yard.

It's up to you whether you return that poor dog to owners who are obviously so dumb they A) don't know what kind of dog they have and B) can't even place an ad for it's return properly.  Maybe the dog got lost, maybe it escaped preferring to take it's chances on the open road.  You'll know for sure when the owners show up, if they can find you, to claim the dog.  If it has a look of terror on it's face and tries to hide then just lie to them and say it ran off again.  Then give it a bath, name it Virgil Hilts, and let it watch "The Great Escape" with you that evening.
