Anyone here ever been a foster parent or you currently are fostering a child?

Had a discussion about this last night.

Pros and cons?

I know some people who started out as foster parents and later adopted 3 of the children.

I've known foster kids when I was a teen. I'd say the biggest con is a lot of the kids are damaged. I mean that in the sense that they are not respectful, steal, do drugs, etc. Pretty much they have grown up in a bad  place and have learned from it. Others might have mental issues.

I'm not saying you shouldn't do it, just understand it can be very stressful at times.

I've been tossing around the idea of foster parenting a child or two under the age of 5

Close friend and neighbor did foster parenting for several years and there are certain "rules" to live by.

1) When they arrive, do not take ANY of their stuff inside. All clothes get thrown out, toys are checked carefully etc..
You want to do this religiously unless you want to infest your home with fleas/lice/cockroaches etc...

2) Do not give them free reign until they earn your trust, make them REALLY earn your trust as most of these kids have
seen it all and can manipulate you like a Vegas con artist.

3) Treat them with love and respect, treat them like they are your own and many turn out to be great kids.

4) Be aware that most will be "damaged" due to previous lifestyles.
