My S5IS takes pictures in 4x3 mode. I've found that when paying for enlargements, say 8x10 that they are cropping the picture in ways I don't like. There is a new wide angle format available with this camera (16 x 9) Which is less likely to be cropped for printing. What is the format of the typical DSLR camera? Thanks |

DSLR cameras are almost always 3:2. No cropping is done on a typical 4x6 print. Always pre-crop your pics to the correct format, so that the decision about cropping is made by you, and not a computer or tech. If you shoot in 16:9, you are in effect pre-cropping your picture in camera. No pixels are added, and the top and bottom strip of the sensor isn't used. If I were you, I would shoot in 4:3 format, and keep in mind that cropping an 8x10 and 5x7 will cut off stuff from the wide direction, and cropping to 4x6 will crop from the narrow direction. If you shoot in 16:9 format, you'll end up with MORE cropping, not less. 4:3 is a typical monitor or TV ratio. You'll want to pre-crop for printing. |
The S5is does have a setting that fuzzes across the top and bottom of the viewfinder to show the 3:2 area. I will use that and then not worry so much about cropping. Thanks |
