If you're going to put that much time and effort into something, why not start with good material?

True, but it's just a work of art, right now.

He could have forged it out of good steel and forged the railroad spike part just as well.

That way, he'd have a knife that looked like a railroad spike, instead of a railroad spike that looked like a knife. But, that's just my practical side talkin.

Depending on when those rail road spikes were made it could be good steel.

They hold an edge well I was told from someone who has a couple.

Also takes an edge , sharp as a razor

I'd rather have a Tomahawk forged out of a railroad spike like buddy of mine had someone build him.  A very nice 'hawk with a nice hammer on the back from the original spike head.  I'd probably get it plated to prevent any rusting, but I'd have to research a good, durable plating material.  Any recommendations?

A piece of tool steel is often forge welded into the cutting edge of a hawk.

I've always enjoyed that sort of thing. True works of art.
