I've been having problems with the heat in my car since last winter (they only go out halfway through the winter.)  With summer ending I thought I should finally get it fixed.  I flipped it over to heat yesterday to see if there was anything there.  I heard a thumping sound coming from the dash that I can also feel just behind the ash tray.  Is this something I can fix?  I haven't crawled under the dash yet to see if whatever it is can be accessed from there.

Thoughts from anyone in the know?

It is probably a damper door that is stuck shut.  You really have to be dedicated to tear it apart to fix it...but it can be done.

The blend door control is on top of the heater box....been known to go bad...gotta pull the dash to get to it.

Any idea what it would cost to have the dealer fix it?

average charge would be between 6-8 hours labor, rate of say, 80-90 per frh
parts would run you anywhere from 100-200

Get a shop manual, get yourself a weeken free from work, women and TV.  Get a case of your favorite beverage, preferably non-alcoholic.  And immerse yourself in the job.

You can do it, it just seems difficult.  And be damn careful of the airbag.

The temperature blend door is probably warped and stuck in the case.  The dash has to come out of the car to replace it.  Figure 6-8 hours to replace it at your friendly neighborhood stealership, plus $30-40 for the part.

3.0L OR 3.8L engine?

Are you adding coolant on a regular basis?

No coolant problems.  Had some big ones last year though.  It's the 3.0L engine.  It's been through 3 thermostats and a coolant reservoir bottle.  Has been fine since Feb. though.

I actually had the heat looked at in the spring (before it was making that thumping noise) and the mechanic couldn't figure out what was wrong with it.  He pinched off a bypass hose with a pair of vice grips and it put a little heat into the car while you were moving.  He said it wasn't the heater core because the out hose on the core gets hot.

Then it is definitely the mixing door.  The heat control is done by mixing two streams of air, one from the heater core and the other fresh air.  The door on your car is stuck closed.

Do you have the tools?  A basic 1/4" and 3/8" metric and SAE socket set with handles, various screwdrivers, pliers and possibly Torx wrenches would be a good start.

Do you have alternate transportation?  You might need to run and get something.

How about a friend (in person)?

And a good light is always a good thing to have.

I have all of the tools.  The only thing I lack is the time.  I'm going to check with my dad's mechanic this week and see what it will cost me.  He's a bit slow but he usually charges half what the other shops charge.

I crawled around under the dash last night and found the thumping noise is coming from right behind the glove box.  Does this give anyone a clue to what the issue is?

ETA:  I did a little more digging around. I started unplugging things to see which controlled the thumping thing. It is a 5 wire blue plug at about the middle of the glove box. There is another strange looking plug right next to it that looks like vacuum hoses maybe?  If I unplug it the thumping stops, if I plug it back in it starts again.
