I would not be surprised if it was accurate, but would also point out the population density of the darker shaded areas is pretty low.

So it may be (deliberately or inadvertently) painting a picture that big cities don't have many folks on assistance.

Interactive USDA map: Linkeroo

I could see if I can download a shapefile or geodatabase...I have a single use ArcINFO license on my work laptop and could rock out a quick thematic map.

Looking at my state the blue areas are the ones that are either reservations or have a fairly substantial population of the type of people that live on reservations.  I'll just leave it at that.

Yeah, I don't think it's very accurate because Detroit looks to have almost zero recipients and that's obviously BS.

Hmmmmm......

Arizona, New Mexico, and southern Texas all have one this in common...  what could it be?

The cities in the southeast have one thing in common... what could it be?

large section in the middle of the state has over 50% on food stamps.  That kinda surprised me for a state with a reputation of rugged self-sufficiency

I think it's the pronounced dark spot.  The interactive map lets you pan and zoom and it shows Wayne County having lots.

Data is as of 2007.

I imagine it is much worse. Half the children in my kids' grade school qualified for subsidized lunch this year, and this is not the barrio, this is middle class USA. The shit has hit the fan.

I'm all for locally funded school lunch and breakfast subsidies. These are kids in my neighborhood. They are my neighbors. I am responsible for them.

Funny how those unable to make life choices that put food on the table are also unable to make healthy choices.

I don't think most of those included on that map are descendants of former confederates.

I cannot speak for the entire southern US, but if you look at Mississippi there is a particular region on the west side of the state that is the darkest blue (50%+).  I know from living there for a decade that this particular area of the state is greater than 50% "minorities". I have a feeling this holds true for much of the rest of the south as well.  I also know from living and working there that the number of those minorities (in this particular area) on assistance approaches dang near 100%.

I'm not judging anyone or saying this in any sort of racist manner. Just a personal observation from living, working, and going to school right in the middle of that area.
