The other day it was nice outside so I had some (screened) windows open to cool off the house and let some fresh air in. I was making some pasta sauce and had just started sautéing the onions, garlic, celery, and carrots when I notice a couple flies buzzing around. Whatever, must have let them in when I let the dog in or something. Anyway, I broke out the lamb and beef to start putting it through the grinder and notice a few more. By the time I'm in the middle of grinding there is about a half dozen flying around just in the kitchen. I washed my hands real quick and go to shut the windows and the house looks like the damn "Ammityville Horror" house at the beginning with all the flies (ok not that bad, but still). When I got to the bedroom there was at least a dozen flies trying to get in from the outside on the window sitting on the screen. I closed everything up and covered all the food and started going on a killing spree. Ever since, every time I open a door, there are like three or so flies just waiting to get in.

We keep our house very clean due to my wife's allergies, there is no mystery odors at all, we keep food stuff out of the trash (it goes in a Ziploc in one of the freezers until trash day), and the outside can is 10-15 yards away. I'm guessing they were obviously attracted to the food that was being cooked, but damn that was a ton of flies and it's been three days and it seems like they are just hanging out right outside just waiting for the moment the door opens.

Is it fly season or something? Any suggestions on how to keep flies from around the house? I hate keeping the windows closed when it's this nice out, but it was pretty gross killing and cleaning up dozens of flies around the house.

Oh, and damn useless cats just sitting around watching them. Get to work you lazy bastards, this ain't no union shop!

We have had the same problem with a log cabin we have. I called Iowa state extension office. They told me to spray the exterior of the cabin with any pesticide containing PERMETHRIN ( I think is the right spelling)
When I say spray the exterior I mean everything. So far It has worked well. About July 1st I spray and again at the end of September. Hope this helps. Cluster flies is what they called them.

I put up some fly traps that you add water to and then hang out ,get them at Lowes, Depot or Tractor Supply. They stink so keep them away from the house a little. It is amazing how many flies they catch.

If you hang these they will leave. I don't know why but it scares the hell out of them. It works over trash cans, as barriers. I even seen them at use in vehicles. Try it now with a freezer bag.

^^^ Well that there is just plain interesting. I may have to look into that just for funsies.

Thanks for the other advise too, I think tomorrow I will be heading to the Depot to see if they have this dragnet and traps.

My windows are currently open (ahhh a nice 70 degree July afternoon - global warming, pfft!) and only a few flies got inside but there are still some hanging out on the outside.

Thanks again!

Fill a zip lock bag 3/4 full of water drop in a penny and hang it next to windows and doors.
