Ok ... need some advice from the pros ... Seems my days of being a cheap bastard and leeching off of friends at the range are coming to an end. I've had an AK for about 6 months now, but I am now looking to get an AR in a few months. This will be my first AR and I've thought of a few different options. Basically I've narrowed it down to 2 options. 1. Bushmaster Modular Carbine, I like how it comes already with the FF system and the flip up site. I trust the name, and can pick one up here for around 1200$. The reason I like the idea of it is because it already has the FF and that is a plus if I decide to shoot IPSC with it later. 2. Build from parts from Adco using RR parts. I had a friend do this, building from the "make your own custom M4 upper" tool, and it turned out really nice. basically I want to go with something I can stick a free float tube on and customize out a little. I am planning to wait to actually order it after 9/14 ... but I am really wondering what is the best route ... or if I'm going out on un-needed expenses. What you all think? I'm not afraid to say I am a total Noob on what to look for here, and I don't want to get railroaded buying a bunch of shit that I don't need. thanks ... |

Your first AR needs to be an A2. I really do believe that Actually, I suggest that to all first AR buyers. But you sound like you know what you want. I would suggest the ADCO/RRA route. Can't beat the price, quality, and service from ADCO and RRA. I do question the free float barrel. I really think they are a waste of money, unless you are a serious competitor. My RRA A2 HBAR does sub-1 MOA with standard handguards and a bipod. How much better would you be needing? I'm going the RRA A4 route with a Magpul M93A stock and a flash suppressor come Sept. |

Look around. You should be able to get into a quality AR for UNDER $800 NEW, less for used-think PAWN SHOP. I got my Colt HBAR (20" bbl) from a gunshop that had it on consignment. Looked as though it had NEVER been fired. Clean as a whistle. $700 out the door. I got a DPMS/Panther 16Lite (looks like a CAR15) for $650 BRAND NEW out the door. Nothing at all wrong with a Bushmaster, but $1200 seems a little steep to me. |
Hehehe ... I knew this conversation would happen eventually I've been using kill9cowboy online for years in games, and being a linux guy, always had lots of people ask what the kill9 was about ... I would just say something along the lines of "just computer stuff" ... When I came on here and saw you in a thread, I was like "whoa ... no shit ... " You a fellow linux user? And Leisure_Shoot, I'm not totally sure why I *need* the Free Float Tube. That's why I was a little confused, alot of guys at my range have them on their ARs, and from the sound of it, make it seem that there is really no way to shoot competition without one ... I've shot on A4s, and A2s both without the FF, and they shot accurate enough. I guess its always tempting to throw on the fancy stuff ... lol ... I prolly don't have an actual legitimate reason to have the FF tube on there. |

Get the modular carbine. You'll save yourself a ton of money! Now, I DARE ANYONE to dispute the following points! About a week after you get your first AR you'll want to put an optic on it, probably an Aimpoint or another red dot. Then you're going to NEED a flip up sight, then a flashlight, and a pistol grip on the fore end. Byt the time you're done you'll have a BMAS Carbine that cost more and $1200, plus all kinds of additional crap on it! If I had it to do over, I'd go that route. |
I started using my nick back in the early '90s when I first started using HP-UX systems and playing modem Doom. It's sort of stuck ever since. My limiting factor on my first (and only, so far) AR was cost, so I went with the Bushmaster carbine with the removable handle for around $800. I haven't shot it enough, though...a problem I plan to address soon. |
