My first pipe restoration. Found this late 50s KayWoodie Flame Grain number 11 in the antique store. Intact 3-hole stinger, lots of cake inside but overall decent condition. I did not want to work it over too much, not to smooth all the marks and dings, felt it would remove some of the "character". Stinger will also stay intact. Good cleaning with the 95% grain alcohol, removed the silicon sleeve and polished the stem, removed some of the rash that was under the sleeve and some tooth marks. Reamed out the stummel, cleaned the rim and polished it with carnauba wax. Then I loaded the bowl with kosher salt and poured some more Everclear into it. it sat like that for the day, and the salt turned dark orange. After it dried up, I coated it with maple syrup inside the bowl and filled it up with the activated charcoal powder to for the final protective finish inside I see how it will become an addiction when found Attached File Attached File after reaming the bowl to the bare wood Attached File finished the outside Attached File was able to save the markings Attached File and finally after char treatment - will be ready for a smoke in a few days of curing Attached File |

Very nice. I find a lot of Kaywoodie's at the flea market. I've tidied up a couple, but just recently sent one off Mary Ann Keller for restoration. It was very similar to yours, but had flats around the bowl. Perhaps an octagon, if I remember correctly. Flame grain, too. It was a Father's Day give for my son in law. Always like a good pipe thread! |
