I made Firefox my default browser, but I have some important links (made into icons on my desktop) that don't work right with Firefox.  I get an incompatible browser message that says to use IE.

Is there any way to modify the link icons to open IE instead of Firefox?

Right click on the link, choose properties. Highlight the link address, hit ctrl+C to copy. Close dialog box. Right click on desktop, choose new, shortcut. For command line use:

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" http://url.com

Include the quotes, and Ctrl+V paste the copied address in place of url.com above. Click next, name the shortcut and click finished.
