any way of running down the SN of a firearm? Dad had one stolen this weekend, and did not have his serial number written down anywhere.

on a related note,
WRITE DOWN YOUR SERIAL NUMBERS ON YOUR FIREARMS AND PUT THEM SOME PLACE THAT YOU WON'T LOSE THEM!!!!!!!!!!

if he has a bill of sale/ receipt it might be on that. Depending on how old it is (if it was bought new) the FFL MIGHT look it up for you.

I save all my bill of sales. They should have the S/N on them.
I wish your dad good luck getting his property back.

Ain't gonna happen.

The firearm is long gone, I can almost promise that.

I learned my lesson on a 200 dollar pawn shop mossberg shotty about 3 years ago. Now i have all my serial numbers wrote down, in several spots.

DONT THINK ABOUT IT, JUST WRITE THEM DOWN.

It was purchased a while ago (6 years or so) and the store that he bought it from has changed ownerships a couple times. so that is a no go there either.

I did that about a year ago. One list in the file cabinet, one in the safe, and one in the cabinet above my cleaning bench...just in case.

That reminds me. Time to update the list.

One better.  Take digital photos of your firearms.  One photo that shows the whole firearm and one photo that shows the serial number.  This really, really helps if you have a firearm insured.
