| Finally got cold here so I get my favorite coat out, my old field jacket, and i noticed something. What are the two button holes on the outside of the back collar for? I don't remember ever being issued something that attached there. |
There was a time, believe it or not, when poly pro and Gortex were not issue items. |
Yepp. I remember wearing wool long johns, fatigues, field jacket and liner and helmet liner and still freezing my balls off. |
No shit. I was issued a Goretex on my last go-round, but still haven't quite figured out why I'd want to wear it instead of my field jacket. And I was an 11B too, and I wore the motherfucker a bit. |

Actually, the two button holes go onto the epulet buttons to keep the collar down. I wear my field jacket about every day up here. With the liner, its quite warm and you can wrap the collar around your neck. Combine with a balaclava and you have a pretty good gig. The gortex with poly pro is better, but not as convient when you are going in and out of heated buildings. |
The button holes in the back of the collar are definitely for the hood, I have one attached to my field jacket right now if anybody would like me to snap a pic. I also have a couple of hood extensions for the Goretex parka, those snaps on the front of the "brim" are actually for attaching the fur/goretex hood extender for really nasty weather. The BDU field jacket hood I got issued looks nothing like a parja hood though, it has a zipper down the middle so it will lay flat when not in use, and normal BDU colors with brown/black fur on the inside. |
I've got the issued gortex polypro and all that crap, but only wear it when it's raining. I wear the field jacket I got at a surplus store when it's cold. |
Smart man, the gortex shit was never meant to keep you warm, only dry, the good old M-65, especeially with the liner does a much better job. Can't convince the young guys of that though, style first ya know. |
