Our 401k plan offers about 20+ target date funds, a host of international funds and then a few gems like JLGMX.

Today they had this posted in my account. I chuckled.

Anyone else get "recommendations" on their accounts as I have not seen anything like this with Vanguard or Fidelity

No, it has never happened to me.  No 401k since I have retired, so it won’t happen now.  I would have been mildly irritated if it had happened to me.

My wife gets those on her roth 401k. Just recommendations though, it wont automatically re-balance it to what it thinks is best unless you allow it to.

My companies retirement account is managed by an actual human, he tailors each of our accounts based off how tolerant of risk each of us are, how long you have until retirement, and how much you have invested (either in the company sponsored plan, another account with him or otherwise)
Pretty pleased with him, seems to do a pretty good job.

You probably have a profile on that account that says what kind of investor you’re looking to be, eg. conservative, balanced, growth, etc. If you then own investments that do really well like NVDA or tech funds, the proportion of your portfolio becomes weighted “too” aggressively and you get these automated messages.

Edit: Just noticed it was a 401k which probably means the account itself sets the goals to caution against high-risk investing.

That's just some bullshit automation finding people with too high of a single allocation, such as US stocks, or Fixed income assets.

Here is mine:

Fidelity (and I assume others) have all manner of automated systems that look for "discrepancies", it's part of their risk management and surely lawyers are involved.
You have to opt into "aggressive investing" at Fidelity before they will let you buy certain investments (bitcoin ETFs, covered call or 0-day ETFs, and many more types of things).

There are countless pictures on the internet of letters from fidelity ensure that your investment activities match your stated investment objectives.

I disagree.  Its part of their marketing.  They want to keep you engaged with their website.  Clicking around, reading articles, and eventually giving them more money.

Get them all the time.

It’s based on very generic assumptions like all you assets are inside this 401k, and your portfolio should match the allocations that one of their target date funds would suggest.

It’s one of downsides of the “robo advisor” model. Fidelity is competing with Chat GPT and other AI tools which are actually growing in popularity for doing financial planning. Lots of financial advisors I know have been amazed at the free AI tools and see a possibility that their utility will be very limited.

Yeah, me too. NetBenefits 401K using BrokerageLink. My tech stocks are doing fine, thank you. I don't want your 3% conservative return, thanks again for your interest. Now, leave me alone.

Yep.

And my return is running 10+ points over the S&P*…I guess they want me to throttle back and buy some of their funds instead of individual stocks.

Your investment priorities are set in your fidelity account, pretty sure they default to a very conservative setting unless/until you change them.
When you invest in a manner that is inconsistent with how you say you want to be invested fidelity is simply checking up to ensure you are fully aware of what’s going on.
“Hey morgan321, you say you want to be conservative and are unwilling to tolerate any reduction in your balance.  We noticed you went all in on Bitcoin last week.  Bitcoin is extremely volatile and it’s risk is not compatible with how you told us want to invest your money.  We’re just making 100% sure you are aware of this. “

Just look in some threads in here where people say “vanguard sucks because my 401k hasn’t grown” as evidence to how clueless some people are about what they are invested in.

I’ve used fidelity for 25 years and apparently I have enough money that they call me out of the blue 1-2 times per year and ask if there is anything they can do or any questions I have.  Not one single time have they tried to sell me a service or investment of any type.
I don’t understand why a paper letter, email, or notice when logged in is such a controversial subject.

ETA: Fidelity runs their own Reddit for customer service.  Here is a post where they outline the how/why for the investment profile that is set for each fidelity account.

I think I had one small(ish) investment say - are you even still alive?
And that's not really you, you need to prove it.  They needed a copy
of my drivers license; but I never sent it....until they locked me out of
the account until I gave them a bunch of info.

Great responses in here. Great to hear we are not "normal" or "average"!!

Did some digging and our new to us HSA through Fidelity has trading options.

Just found that we can purchase VITAX inside our HSA with only a $2,500 minimum buyin then an ongoing purchase with payroll contributions. That fund typically has a $100k buyin so stoked on that play.

If you are young enough that is great.  Weird that VITAX has a 100k min, but their equivalent ETF VGT has no min.

I just realized that my Fidelity HSA allows us to invest in anything we want.  We are just capped to about 300 funds for their built in auto-investing of HSA payroll contributions feature.

Back when I was contributing to my Fidelity 401K, we were allowed to place up to 95% of the money into NetBenefits. This gave us the option to invest in countless funds and stocks that Fidelity offered, instead of the few lower return ones in "The Plan." It has done very well for me. Of course, no one ever told us employees that this was an option. I found out one day when Fidelity had a representative at work, and I asked him. He said, "Sure, use NetBenefits and you can choose any fund or stock you want."

ETA: BrokerageLink, not NetBenefits.

You mean BrokerageLink?  Net Benefits is the side program that let's you change contributions and other benefit options.  You can set up BrokerageLink through Net Benefits though.

At least that's how my plan is...

49 years old but see the HSA box as a 10 year box and another bucket of streams of income, one day.

Good advice on the HSA funds and contributions as I just did some digging. You are right as ours is the same. I can "open market" buy VITAX ($2,500) inside the HSA but future payroll funds have to go to only a designated box of 30 funds but one box is "cash". I'm going to purchase at $2,500 then future funds, see if it will let me add to the position with less than $2,500 buys.

I did upset the apple cart at corporate and then politely told them they were hypocrites: I had set my HSA funding to be $2,000 per paycheck and was going to do a bang-bang/1/3bang max it out. They flipped out and said the system won't let me do that as it would exceed the maximum contributions for the year. I had told them I was going to zero fund after the maximum then pointed out their same Fidelity based 401k system was letting me contribute $2,500 per paycheck and that would exceed the contribution limit in 26 payrolls but it let me do it? Much gnashing of teeth and hand wringing ensued.

Weird.  When we set up our HSA contributions during open enrollment, we can pick any schedule we want.  Some people lump sum and and complete it in two paychecks.  I do about 750 per paycheck and set it up in the enrollment system and was done by April 30th.

I front load everything, because in my industry - you never know if you will be employed halfway through the year.

401k completed by end of Feb.
401k catchup completed by end of March.
HSA completed by end of April.
Mega Backdoor Roth into 401k completed by mid July.
Employee stock purchase limit completed by end of Sept.

I don't really see much of a paycheck at all until August and just live on savings.

Tying both subjects together... I was on the phone with Fidelity the other day to start making Mega Back Door contributions.  At the end he wanted to know why my account is 95% BrokerageLink.  He was nice, but quite pushy about letting them run the show.  I've never had them push so hard before.  I declined his offer.
