So I've got my first smartphone ordered and will receive in a day or two. Galaxy S3. Really excited as I'm one of the only people I know without a smartphone.
What are your favorite apps for your android phones. What do they do? One thing I'm excited to try is to get NES, SNES, Genesis, and PC Engine emulators running and outputting HD to my TV and using a PS3 remote to play games. |

Here droid go.
The serious recommendation I would add is Tasker. It's a bit daunting to learn how to use it, but once it does, you can do shit like have your phone turn off WiFi and set all your volumes where you want them if you leave home, and then have them turn down and do other things when you get to work. It basically does some "If This, Then That" functions that can take your location, the network you're on and other conditions to do things like change settings. It can get VERY complicated, but a lot of the things like the example I mention above are not very difficult to do. Tasker makes a smartphone into a SMART phone. |

I have WISER (haz mat app) and of course Strelok. I also loaded unit converter after getting into a discussion about radiation dosing post Fukishima.
Nightwatch is a good one. Shuts down your phone from alerting for calls or texts from people not on your "whitelist" and silences the stupid "Battery Charged - remove charger!" alarm that typically went off around 0230 or so. ETA - going to look into TASKER though. |

Quoted: Quoted: Also, rooting....am I eventually going to want to do it? Yes. I got one of the galaxy nexii that was given a bad recovery file when it did the first out of the box update, this was unknown to me until it tried to update to 4.0.4 (months later). When it would try to update it would hang in the boot screen until you yanked the battery. I had two options- try and go back to verizon/samsung to get it fixed or unlock/root and flash it myself. It was easy enough to do but it wipes your phone. If you are going to do it, do it right away. |

Radar Detector - Enables your phone to detect police radar. SpeedTrap - Identifies locations frequently used by the po-po.
It detects some of the radar. Not laser, of course. And it's worth every penny I paid (free). https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vox.radardetector |

Edit: N/M it's running a GPS database. This app is a database running off GPS not a detector. I own a handheld X/K/KA Band radar gun, and have aimed the gun at my Droid 3 with this app installed and running. It never changed signal levels at all. I aimed it from all angles, and I increased the distance from 5 feet to about 50 feet with no difference. It never reacted to the RF my gun was putting out. |

It is interesting that you own a handheld X/K/KA Band radar gun. For what, pray tell, do you use this radar gun? This app is more than GPS. I've noticed that it reports all sorts of radio signals, including radar and strong wifi. That wouldn't be possible with a GPS database. Try it out for yourself. |

newshog for news. kind of setup like google news for your phone. But they have some random topics you can select to view
drudge report raindar - uses position overlayed on a weather radar map colornote gold silver live prices - self explanitory, but also includes 30day - 10 year price maps, spot prices, other precious metal prices, has a calculator for how much your collection is worth, etc there's a couple more, but that's what I use primarily |

Quoted: Quoted: Quoted: Also, rooting....am I eventually going to want to do it? How techy are you? Comes pretty naturally to me. Can anyone give me examples of the benefits of rooting? For me, I did it because I wanted some apps that are only available on rooted phones, such as LBE Privacy Guard; ability to install Cyanogenmod; overclock the CPU; and get rid of Carrier IQ. |

GEEKER JOY!!!!
I figured out the API for my home automation controller (Universal Devices ISY99i) and got Tasker to interface with it! I can now use Tasker to automatically set things in my house! It took a little jiggery-pokery because all of the commands for the HA stuff need to be sent either via wget or curl, and Android has neither. Busybox has a wget binary, but it is not complete and would not take the password argument. I searched around and found a guy that compiled a wget binary for Android. Got it in place on the phone and BAM! I fucking LOVE Android. You couldn't do this shit on iOS. No fucking way. |

One last question. Rooting with odin looks pretty straight forward.
Is it possible to destroy the phone while attempting to root it or will it always be possible to flash back to factory as long as none of the hardware is damaged? Basically I want to root the phone as soon as I get it but don't want to do it if there is any chance that doing so could destroy the phone. |
