So a friend got me into Facebook a few months ago.  So far I don't use it much but I have found dozens of friends I went to high school with, etc.  So its kinda cool for keeping up with folks.

But I'm worried about spam/privacy/etc issues.

Specifically, all the various requests....

Is all this crap safe?  Is it just going to fill up my inbox?  If I join a "cause" can people see what types of things I affiliate with?  Are companies paying/going to pay/may someday pay Facebook for demographic information?

Am I being paranoid?

It's all dumb shit your friends send you to do. I just ignore them.

I've got like 85 of those things waiting to be approved. I ignore them. No one actually gives a shit if I play or not, because the truth of it is, they add the application and play it, then when it says "send it to your friends so they can join in!", they select everyone and send it out like a wide broadcast. So it's spam in that sense, but it's not malware.

Either I have some friends intelligent enough to not waste their own time on facebook, or I'm just not well-liked, because I get next to nothing on my account.

Now I don't have a ton of facebook friends, but I don't have a really small number either. I have everybody I know from college friended (seeing as we were in college right as facebook was really emerging) plus people from HS, previous jobs, and some relatives too (siblings & cousins).

Most of it is bull. Shouldn't be hard to filter out the nonsense and still keep in touch with friends. I think I have one application and that is the "where I've been" and I like it because it keeps track of the states I've been too as well as countries, and I'm hoping to make it to all fifty within the next ten years.

This.

I've started getting friend requests for people on foreign networks. Maybe the Nigerians are testing out a new medium to hock their scams?

Set 'em to ignore.  Most of them will allow the application to look at your private information if you accept the games, so I never do.

apps are just a scam to trick you into authorizing some sleazy marketing company to collect information on you and all your friends

If you get any that say Name your five favorite XXXXX don't open them. You will be getting crap from your friends, and all their friends, and on and on.

The only one I use is Mafia Wars. It's a great time waster.

The reason Facebook was better than Myspace was because of it's clean layout, now with all the stupid applications and stalker feed and every other shitty idea they've came up with in the past two years it's almost worse.
