Facebook haters?

I know arfcom has it's share of die-hard Facebook haters, and I admit myself that I was dragged into it by my wife and daughters, kicking and screaming a couple of years ago.

Fast forward to today. FB has actually been a huge blessing to me if for no other reason than this: The majority of my USN shipmates from 85-88 (DDG-22 / WEPS F&G Divisions) have connected on FB and maintain regular contact with each other. What a riot it is to see everyone older, grayer, overall happier, and eager to share photos, swap old sea stories, as well as keep up on our current lives. It's been a true blessing to have a forum to stay connected with my brothers in arms that I had the honor and privilege to serve with so long ago.

Would not have been possible without Facebook.

That is all. Carry on.

PS: Gratuitous DDG pron.

Zuck: Yeah so if you ever need info about anyone at Harvard

Zuck: Just ask.

Zuck: I have over 4,000 emails, pictures, addresses, SNS

[Redacted Friend's Name]: What? How'd you manage that one?

Zuck: People just submitted it.

Zuck: I don't know why.

Zuck: They "trust me"

Zuck: Dumb fucks.

I grudgingly set up an account there to make it easier for relatives who live far away to stay in touch.

I have mixed feelings about it.

On the one hand, I find that the inherent gayness of the whole concept offends my basic sense of masculinity (as do many other aspects of modern day metrosexual latte sipping swishified e-culture).

On the other hand, I have found some of my old service buddies on there, who I haven't seen in many, many years.  These are all good men who shoot guns and (as Hunter Thompson put it) "stomp on the terra," who
do not fit into the above described culture.

Don't fear innovation and technology, just probably understand ramifications better after being burned by Google back around 2001.  I try to keep my real identity off the internet as much as possible.
And I connected with classmates and friends through ICQ and Yahoo quite easily in the 1990's when I sought them out.  I just don't see how Facebook is much different, aside from posting all my associations and things like photographs where anyone can see them.  Why do that?  I don't get this complete voluntary exposure to complete strangers.

Congrats to the OP but I still hate Facebook with a passion. It has killed many good forums including my football forum... even my damn partner spends all his time on fuckbook and never checks in. My site is done as of this year after 6 years.

And I guess I'm a heartless bastard, I don't want to talk to people I knew from 20-30 years ago, they're strangers to me now, including relatives. I prefer the friends I talk to on a regular basis. That is, literally talk to and visit.

I like FB. It helps me keep in touch with the folks back home and I also found my half sister that I hadn't seen in 25 years. In fact, because of FB, when I go home next week on R&R we are having a big shindig at my house and me and my 2 sisters and dad will all be in the same place at the same time. That will be the first time that's ever happened.

I think facebook is a great tool. It tracks everything for me, b-days, political movements, what my governor is doing, what my gun club is doing, when my next battle assembly is, reminds me when my anniversary is. Its an email client and an instant messenger as well. Good way to steal pictures that other people take of you too. I never have to carry a camera around again I can now just steal the pictures of people I was with.

I use it to keep in contact with my old Army friends as well.  I haven't laid eyes on any one of them in fifteen years but we still communicate all the time.

I don't give a damn why other people use it.  They can put what they had for dinner or that they are at the Cheesecake Factory.  I don't know why the champions of freedom here on arfcom are always so interested bashing anything socially related.  I guess chronic masturbation will do that.

Yeah that's because they don't keep there profiles private. Us arfcom facebookers have out profile set to private and you can't find our pages through a search engine. I don't see any non-sense I just see my friends and family when I get on.

But I also don't accept friend requests from weirdos either, even if I know the person.

Facebook is just like life, If you are an idiot and can't handle your life then you are going to have trouble on facebook.

What the hell is it with Facebook'ers constantly trying to get non-users to sign up?  I feel like an atheist at church with all the constant attempts at "conversion."

Why can't you just leave us be?  Every time I talk to my friends who are on it I don't try and convince them to quit using it, why can't we have the same consideration?  We just don't wanna, OK?

I think those who are against it are really projecting. Its just a  tool.  Evidently have have little self control or intelligence to handle it. Maybe it best they stay off of it. Some folks are just too stupid for something as simple as FaceBook.

OP, I'm glad you found a use for FB, but you can count me among the luddites.

Plenty of folks kept harassing me to get on FB.  So I did, made connections (or whatever it's called) with the people bugging me about it, changed my status to "There. Happy?" and logged off never to be seen on FB again.
