I just canceled my oldest credit line. for a stupid ( on their part) reason
I have lauded their theft protection on this board and elsewhere for decade(s) Today the pricks jumped the shark. My rating is 796 as of this morning I owe $0 I've logged into mine and my wifes accounts for years to zero them out. Today she is at work ( I'm off) I went to login, they wanted to verify her account's emai address and phone. She's at work. I couldn't pay off her $54 bill... So I call. THEY WON'T LET ME PAY IT mind you I'm not asking for spending history, she's my wife and both of our cards get paid from the same account. I Have: Her full name. The account login. The password. I just don't have next to me her Soc, nor her phone, or email login. WTF if something happened to me I ask them? How could I pay that bill? *crickets* sorry sir... * well then cancel my account, I don't want to ruin my credit if in the hospital or something. Again.. payment was to come out of oyur account I've used for years to pay them, I even offered to pay out of my private savings.... So I canceled my card |
|
I had two very high capacity cards with them before the economy went to shit and a perfect credit score. No balances, well I buy stuff and pay them right away off. I get a letter from them one day in the mail that one card was cancelled and one was reduced to 5,000 due to the current economic risks or some such shit. I've had the cards for nearly a decade, poof.
I told them to go shove the last card. Personally I no longer have any credit cards where there isn't a branch locally that I can pay them at. I learned the hard way with these out of state issuers. If it was local all you had to do was a slip with her account number and the cash, done. |

If you even remotely say you're a husband they all of a sudden want a stupid amount of info... yet, they can't discriminate if you have a womans name but sound like a guy. |

Your story is stupid and makes no sense. They wouldn't let you pay her account because it's not yours and you didn't have the info required. So a to get back you canceled your own account which is different? I'm telling you screw Chase and all that they support. Screw em, their rewards suck anyway, Amex and Discover are much better. My wallet just got thinner. |

My wife and I both have a number of individual accounts in our name only. Some are business related. Some trace back to before we were married. None of the folks who maintain her accounts will speak with me on the phone unless she gets on each time to authorize me, which can be a pain because I handle all of the bills and deal with issues for her when she is on business travel.
So I don't call. When I need to take an action on one of her accounts, I just do it online, using her login. I have all of her info and access to her email. Seems to work just fine. Yes, they want to ensure account holder identity before they let you take actions on a financial account...and they want to cross check against multiple sources of info. That's probably a good thing. In fact, I am setting up two factor authentication on all of our accounts as each entity supports it, so I am intentionally making it tougher on me to make it more secure. |

There is a huge amount of fraud going on right now in the financial services industry.
I mean, an amount that would probably scare you if you knew how many attempts per day were going on. It has become a full time job, especially with all the hacking of personal info. Unfortunately what you experienced is enhanced security measures to try and counter it. Fraudsters are finding new ways to engineer info out the Customer Service lines in order to use that to their advantage. Since the tactics change almost constantly the only way to adequately contain it is to increase security checks. Even though you're married, it's not your account (I'm assuming since you couldn't get access without her). Which means technically you don't have the right to access it without her approval, and as dumb as it may sound, even pay the bill. You can blame the Credit Card company if you want, but you will find similar experiences wherever you go right now. Companies are losing lots of money to this stuff and they're taking the tact that it's better to be overly cautious than to let more money go out. |

I'm going to transition to whomever they use. yes I kinda shot myself in the foot ( oh no 10-20 pts lol) Discover when I call I get "sally from south Carolina...l who really is "Sally from South Carolina" Amex... well is AMEX, they are great. Chase Capital One? suck a dick. |

I hear your frustration. And while it might seem innocent to just pay off a bill, so why don't they just let you do that - there are settings where that could prove damaging. Basically it's income from an unauthorized source. For some people that can be anything from "Honey, who the Hell paid your bill for you?!?!" to "Hello this is the IRS, we see some activity we weren't expecting and want to know how you go that money", to "Oh wait, I screwed up and meant to pay my account - I don't know who's account that is - I specifically gave you the (incorrect) account number you fools!" to "I paid your bill, and so now we're square man, and by the bank taking me paying your bill, that authorizes us being square for me wrecking your car", to whatever. If you don't know her SSN at least, then the person on the phone has real reason to doubt your authorization to access her account to conduct activity on it.
Sorry, just part of the suck of modern security, but the bank did right - as frustrating as that is. |

I really like Cap1 Why couldn't you just use the app to pay? All you need is her login. Been doing this for years |

Banks have gotten weird, thanks I'm sure to Obama. At the bank I've used for many decades, I've actually had to show my identity to deposit cash in my checking account. And I'm not talking large amounts, just maybe $250. I had the deposit slip from my checkbook, and cash money. CASH!
I looked at the teller and said, "You're serious? I can't put cash in my own account without proving who I am? I'm not taking cash out, I'm putting cash in." Luckily, another teller who knows me stepped in and took my money. But sheesh. If I were doing something suspicious like depositing huge sums of cash on a regular basis, that's one thing. But a stupid small amount in my own account? |

The online login, suddenly wanted me to verify her email or respond to a text. ( both I do not have, her social I have around here but they can suck a dick. And yeah it is a pain, but it is warranted given how much cyber crime occurs each day. I am setting this up on every account we have as each organization supports it. I get why you want to help you wife out. I do the same for my wife because she has a very high stress job and travels a lot, often internationally. She is conditioned now that if she gets one of these texts with a code, she pings me to see if it was me and then forwards it when I verify. |

If you are married why do you have separate accounts? Joint accounts eliminate these issues and are how strong marriages are made.
Even with you two split financially, couldn't she have paid it this evening? I don't see a huge issue here except you chose to make it one. |

And besides, who pays bills by calling these days, all of ours are set up so either one of us can log in, say pay and it is done. |
