I was asked to donate to the Fraternal Order of Police for my state. Is it a worthwhile organization to support? Does a high percentage of the money collected go to helping police officers and their families?

Ask them if you get one of those "get out of jail" free stickers for your car if you donate.

The National FOP is all in favor of CCW (for cops).

In 2003, the WI FOP supported our CCW bill.

Where were they last year?  Good question.

Even better question:  Where will they be this year?

Like all orgainizations, the rank and file usually have vastly different opinions than the management.  I'm a member and it is pretty much a social club, which is nice, but it does have perks.  Check out www.grandlodgefop.org.
Might want to post this in the Brothers forum.  You'll get fewer comments about shooting dogs than here.

At just about every opportunity it seems like the FOP comes out in support of anti-gun legislation.  They seem to be one of the Brady Bunches favorite organizations to quote as being backers of their sensible legislation.

Yes I concur, Police get enough money and backing, especially the organizations supporting ammo serialization. They won't get a cent of charity from me. If the FOP started pushing for nationwide CCW for all citizens, and not 'peace officers', I'd consider it. They are a union, and I don't support unions.
