How can you tell if a FAL was properly headspaced when it was built?

Close your eyes, turn your head, and shoot.

Get a headspace gage.

Trust the builder.

Three ways.

Ask the builder if he used a drill bit to measure the locking shoulder size. If so, I would be careful, there is too much size difference between standard drill bits to do more than a guess at the correct shoulder size.

You can "test" your headspace with a GO gauge and following the test procedure.
But to "check" your headspace, you'll need to remove the locking shoulder and measure it with a calipers and/or test fit the bolt with some pin guages or a gauge rod.

the chamber for 7.62 and 308 are different, I have mine set to 1.62 so I can shoot 308 with out haveing to worry about case seperation or ejection problems

You spend 30 bucks on gauges go and no-go and check it yourself. Make sure you remove the extractor from the bolt before you check the headspace.

So the chamber for the .308 and 7.62 are different. And I've been stocking up on .308 for my STG-58.

the 308 more powerful and has alot more pressure, whats your chamber set at? you really shouldn't worry because even if your chamber is too long the part is 25bucks to change it

It was set at the factory. I guess I'll have to get off my ass and read the owners manual or check the barrel to see what it's chambered for.

don't look at the bbl is it a dsa?

Aren't most parts kit FAL's spec'd for 7.62?
