I've never had an electric razor that could do better than (painfully) shave down to a weeks worth or stubble. What electric razors can actually give a good shave? I'm willing to spend a good bit to solve this little problem. Considering how expensive razor refills are it wouldnt take long to pay for itself.
Thanks a lot. Dustin |

No matter which electric shaver you get, there is a thin piece of metal between the blade and your face.
A razor is touching your skin so it is a closer shave. You will never get a close shave with an electric. A DE razor will solve the problem of epensive refills. |
| My face is very sensitive so it has always been a pain to use razors and electric razors. Instead I use a beard trimmer and use no guard to trim it down a couple times a week. If you are at a job that allows to maintain some facial hair, this is the way to go in my opinion. I just use a basic Remington beard trimmer that cost 30 bucks. |

What’s a DE razor? I'm assuming you mean disposable? I'm not a fan of those, it takes more than one to shave and it feels like crap.
I'm really looking for an electric razor. The only razor I've found that doesn't feel like my face is being ripped off is the Gillette Mach5. Typically I use a cheapish beard trimmer, which rips out more hair than it shaves and always leaves a lot stubble. I know a lot of electric razors do a lot better than that; I've seen quite a few in the Army that were acceptable. I just never knew what kind they were. So what works for you if you have one? |

Dustin You're not going to find an electric razor that will easily shave down a week's worth of growth, without pain. It's not designed for that, it's too "grabby" on long hair. That's why they usually come with the beard trimmer on the back of the electric shaver, to hack that shit down. Like ataylor, I just use a beard trimmer. I'm a farmer, and single, so no one gives a crap if I have a little stubble. It actually shaves quite close if the hair is allowed to grow for at least 3-4 days...better grip on it I guess. This is what I roll with: Wahl Beard Trimmer - Lithium Ion You might also try Dollar Shave Club if you need a "closer than beard trimmer" shave. http://www.dollarshaveclub.com/ ETA: And an electric razor, a good one IMHO. If I was buying one, this would probably be it. Norelco Razor |

Do you by any chance have a picture of how close it shaves? Every decent review or comparison I find online wants you to pay to see the results. |

I've used one of THESE for years, nearly indistinguishable from my Gillette fusion proglide shave.

I finally skipped all of the cheaper electrics and bought a Panasonic, mid-high end Arc shaver. I hesitated at spending $140+ on an electric razor (last one I bought was $10), but it's been a great purchase. I can't easily tell the difference between my shaved face now and when I use a blade. |
| Used to shave with an electric, now its collecting dust in a drawer. After browsing another arfcom thread on the subject of shaving I decided to give Double Edge safety razor's a try. What a huge difference... skin is healthier, I don't get razor burn anymore and the shave is closer. Aside from a few cuts the first time, I don't see why these ever went out of style. They're superior to anything on the market, for me at least. |

A nicer Norelco will work good enough for most guys. But no one should ever be under some illusion that even the best electric razor will ever shave as close as an actual blade on your face. I tried like hell to find one that worked well when I was in the Army because I hate shaving with a passion.. but even with my $100+ Norelcos I'd have to shave again at lunch, and I was never shaved close enough to be "inspection ready." They'd take one look at me and ask if I shaved or immediately accuse me of using an electric.

I don't know man...a weeks worth of stubble.. what kind of electric shaver you using. I use a norelco triple head and it does a fine job. A weeks worth of stubble is different for everyone. A week without shaving would leave me with a full beard, but for some guys a week without shaving is barely anything. It takes a friend of mine three weeks to grow a beard that I can grow in a week. |

Merkur 11c - $20 http://straightrazorplace.com/attachments/vendors-corner/37506d1265163668-bullgoose-shaving-winter-update-merkur-11c-retouched.jpg 30 pack of feather blades $13 http://www.shavingstuff.com/pictures/featherDEblades.JPG I sliced my neck pretty good when I gave feather blades a try. The Japanese don't fuck around when it comes to sharpness of their blades, apparently. Once I got the hang of them though they work great. |
| I have been using a norelco for about a month and it is decent. It is pretty quiet and comfortable to use, but it is not as close as a blade. In years past I have used some pretty crappy electric razors. My experience with them has been that they are noisy, irritating to the skin, and have an unfortunate tendency to tug at the hairs rather than cutting them. The norelco has none of those negatives so far. I can't say how it performs in the long haul, but for now I find the convenience worth the slightly less close shave. |

Get a Braun BASIC model. Make sure your skin is good & dry when you use it.
But DO NOT spend the extra for the "self cleaning base" alcohol- gimick. Its a wasted of $$ and a way to make you buy their expensive denatured alcohol cartridges. You can do the same cleaning by just running the head under hot running water. Braun claims the base "sterilizes the shaver between uses." OK - but if I am the only one using it, why does it require sterilization? And who shares razors?? (Ewwww!). |

braun series 7 - wont go back.. no more irritation on my bitch skin and does a bang up job on my nut sack ETA: im a fireman so I need a decent shave 24/7 for my face piece to create the seal i need. series 7 is the best of both worlds. close enough and very convenient and comfortable |

heres the razor I'm using, its a Remington. It had a bigger head but it broke. http://i1137.photobucket.com/albums/n506/DDustin5/2013-02-13_14-57-44_47_zpsf40d960a.jpg I took this picture 30 seconds after shaving. The red bumps I'm assuming are from it pulling the hair. http://i1137.photobucket.com/albums/n506/DDustin5/2013-02-13_15-08-36_218_zps4f51a6f3.jpg See its really crappy and it gets worse as time goes by. I'm ready to go all in on a more expnsive shaver. My budget is $150 or less. That's not a razor, that's a clipper. You need a foil-screen razor. Buy this and be happy: http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-ES-LT71-S-Nanotech-Rechargeable-Electric/dp/B005DKKBUG/ref=dp_ob_title_hpc |

I think your problem with disposables and cartridges and whatever is partly that you're one hairy motherfucker, and partly that you're not allowing the hair to become fully soaked before you shave. They clog bigtime because they have that straight bar right in front of the blade, and a dry hair bends and pits a razor's edge. Wet hair it zips through like it's nothing. If it's not clogged up.
You're the perfect candidate for an open toothed double-edge razor. But I know you're not looking in that direction, so buy your expensive electric. When it fucks you all up the same as the rest though, remember about the teeth. They look like the meanest of the bunch but they really and truly are not. They don't clog like the cartridges (and the straight bar DE's), and even if you tossed a blade every shave they're still tons cheaper than the cartridges. |

I've used a Braun to a certain amount of success in the past. Where it cuts hair, it cuts it just about as close as a blade. Feels like my face is being sandpapered by a coked-up Colombian stripper with a grudge, though.
The problem is that there are always a few bitter clingers that I can't seem to get no matter how I turn the razor. |

Any experience with the Panasonic ES-LA93-K Arc 4?
Arc 4 Its about $30 cheaper than the Braun 7 series with slightly better reviews. I really liked what I was reading about the Panasonic ES-LV61-A Arc 5 but I puked in my mouth a bit when I read the price of almost $400. Quoted:

I'm not really hairy my facial hair just grows in all f-ed up. It also grows thin in some areas and thick in others, in random directions, and the individual hairs are like super thick and hard to cut. I would like to eventually learn to use a straight razor, but not right now. Maybe over the summer. For now I'm too busy to change my routine up and I need to be quick in the morning. |

Buy one, give it a try when you're not in a hurry. You'll find its no slower than electric to begin with, and faster once you get the hang of it. I use mine in the shower, which makes it a lot easier to use. Hot water on face, shaving cream, shave, rinse n' repeat. Done. A lil' after shave after I get out and I'm GTG. I used to get terrible bumps and collar burn from electric and to a lesser extent from 87 bladed disposable head razors, but I put up with it for years because I didn't know of anything better. |
