I was thinking about purchasing a couple of these EOTech 502. Now I noticed that these do not have the protective hoods on them. Are they still pretty sturdy without the hood on them. I want to get a really reliable set up.
Thanks
Brian

Head over to the optics forum. I think you will find that the 51x or 55x models are preferred as they do offer the hood. If you never plan to drop your rifle, then the 502 would be OK I guess.

I loanned the Mut-4 to a friend that had it slip off his shoulder while kneeling on the ground reading a map {dirt road}, the Glass shattered, the entire body has to be replaced, However EOTech was really good about the repair.
Get the protective hood, it is a must.

The day I mounted my 552/F, I managed to drop it (unmounted) from the top shelf in my garage, to the cement floor.  It landed on the corner of the hood.  After I finished smacking myself in the head a few dozen times, I turned it on, and inspected it fully.  There was a little scratch on the anodizing, but otherwise was unharmed, and functioned perfectly.  I saw no reason to purchase an item that I will depend on with anything less than armoring like the 552 series, and I proved myself right from day one.

If they were "really sturdy" without the "roll bar", why was the "roll bar" made in the first place?

It's a question of degrees.  The base models are designed for civilian use, which means your rifle is cased when carried to and from the range, and is mostly shot from a bench or rest.  In other words, from a military perspective, this is "light, gentle use."  The base model is more than strong enough for this type of shooting.

Military folks and police officers (naming two common examples) constantly move their rifles in-and-out of vehicles, and move around in tight quarters in-and-around buildings, fences, and so forth.  Their rifles get whacked on things, get dropped, get caught on stuff and generally see a fairly high level of abuse.  The base model EOTech without the roll-bar won't last long in this environment, which is how come the roll-bar was invented.

So, what you have to do is take a good, honest look at what your plans are for your rifle, and what type of shooting/training/competing you intend to do, and select your equipment appropriately.
