Why do people cover the serial #'s on their gun pics here?

Is it to prevent people from calling them in as stolen or maybe they were bought F2F and they might be er, questionably sourced and no need for anyone to NCIC your stuff.  

Just wondering if there is a reason or just fear in general.  Most my guns are f2f so I won't pop up if there is some database out there...
