I aslo posted this in Urban Commandos but then I figured it would get more attention here

I use my laptop (Sony Vaio VGM-CR510E) for everything. Music, movies, torrents, timecards for work, everything. I also have 2 os's installed windows vista sp2 and ubuntu 8.10.

I woke up this morning to find a blank screen and my number lock and capslock lights flashing.

Rebooting brought me to GRUB 0.97 menu. I selected Vista/Longhorn (my windows partition) and after a few seconds i got the windows loading screen which promptly flashed to the blue screen of death.

I rebooted, went to the windows recovery partition and tried a system restore. And now grub is fucked.

Loading GRUB GNUI....

Loading GRUB Phase 1.5....

Error 22

It might be a little different than that. But its basically all i get. Ive tried using the terminal From the live cd, but I have exhausted all knowlege of UNIX/Linux that i have. Which was minimal to begin with.

Apart from whatever is happening to Windows, I believed i have ruined my mbr. So heres what i want to try, and for any of you willing to give advice i would appreciate it

A. Wipe my hard drive and Install Ubuntu over the whole thing, and Then use my recovery disks to reinstall windows.

B. Get one of yall to inform as to how I recover grub. Ive looked online for hours now and tried everything I knew and anything someone else tried. I hae the funds to buy anopther laptop, but really wanted to keep this one until it kicked the bucket for good.

c. I have a copy of windows 7 home that my dad bought, didnt want, and then gave to me. I know that before this thing tanked, Upgrade advisor said my laptop was perfectly capable of running windows 7.

So computer gods, what should i do? Im really leaning towards Wondows 7 as my sister has it on her pc and i kinda like it.

Suggestions?

I would check for hardware failures first, if possible:

All funs running?  Especially CPU.  Apply vacuum if necessary.  Bluescreens are very common if you're overheating, which happens very fast if the CPU fan is clogged or not running.

Memory ok?  See if your BIOS has a memory test you can run without needing to boot.  Actually I think the Ubuntu and Windows install disks have one too, which you can run from CD.

Got a spare hard drive you can swap in to try and load from?  If that fails too then you don't need to wipe your old install, you just need to replace whatever is messed up (motherboard?) and go right back to your old disks.

Basically, without a backup, wiping the discs would be my last action.

I opened everything i could get to and blew it out with a can of air and scraped things of with a q tip that had the cotton scrub cut off. I did this about a month ago. I guess i will add that this laptop is about 2 years old maybe more, and has been through an x ray machine right at about 90 times. (Airports and security at power plants).

All fans seem to be running. I keep it on one of those gel cool pads. I use it for maybe an hour or two at a time.
