If you are at an intersection where it's legal to turn right on red, is it okay NOT to?
My dad and I were at a stoplight yesterday in his big honkin' GMC work truck and some little Saturn was beeping their horn because we weren't turning on a red.

I get annoyed when someone doesn't turn right on red (if they have thier signal on) and no one is comming, but I won't beep. Isn't the point to signal before you can turn if you want to turn on a green? If turn on red is legal, there's no reason to wait until the green.....assuming you're clear to turn. |

Isn't the point to signal before you can turn if you want to turn on a green? Signaling indicates the driver's intention, whether it is to turn while the light is red, or after it turns green. If it's red, but no one is coming, why wouldn't you turn? It is not illegal or unsafe, and it is aggravating to those behind who also wish to turn right and potentially get through the light on the street they are turning onto before it turns red. ETA: I've honked at people in front of me in this very situation, I had shit to do. |

Welcome to Montreal!
I don't know if there is a law that you MUST, but if you don't turn right on red after a stop, then don't be suprised if a whole lot of people behind you are wondering what country you came from. It is aggravating when you have been driving for 35 years and suddenly some dork decides to hold up a line of people, |

Remove 'etiquitte' and you'll do fine. What i hate is a left lane person just ahead of me swooping over to the right lane (with not dedicaicated right turn lane just so he won't be sitting behind someone) and therefore blocking any right turners.
But in ARFCOM land thats okay. |
| Assuming its safe I always turn unless its one of those Nazi Police State red light cameras. People say they have gotten tickets for turning right on red before. I don't trust police state cameras run by foreign company so I won't turn right at those fuckers. I try to avoid them but the Liberal Dems and NeoCon's love their fucking cameras. |

Not against the law but is kind of a dick move. Ok, so my dad can just total his work truck with all his tools in it because someone got pissy over him not turning against cross traffic? ![]() Clarification is key. Turning right on red with traffic coming is clearly ridiculous. |

Well, if he didn't want to turn, its fair. Better than those dickheads running the lights. |

And if your Dad sat there for 2 minutes and had a decent opportunity to turn and didn't take it then the honks are well deserved. If there was no opportunity, then no harm-no foul. |

If it's clear in the driver's judgment to turn right on red, and it is legal to do so, treat it like a stop sign. It ain't Sunday, some people have work to do, MCDonalds to go to, etc. Be safe, but don't drive like you're the only person on the road. There are plenty of times I've been honked at for refusing to turn, but if it's clear––-just go. |

Either traffic was clear enough for you to safely go or it was not. If it is safe to proceed and you are not turning right, then it is as silly as not proceeding on a green and you can expect to get honked at and deserve to be. If traffic was not clear, you may still get honked at, but you are in no way obligated to drive in an unsafe manor and the silly thing to do would be to proceed. |
