Occasionally, my ice cubes explode in my drink. Too much air in the water?

Just had one send drink shrapnel almost 3 feet.

Ice in cheap whiskey is allowed.  Jack Daniels, Jameson, etc.

Ice in a nice single malt is a capital offense.

no--exactly the opposite, really.

chances are that the ice froze too slowly.  ice that formed slowly is translucent or cloudy--the result of air bubbles escaping from the liquid water during the slow freezing process.  since an ice cube freezes from the outside in, bubbles in the center of the cube cannot escape into the atmosphere. instead, they're compressed.  when the surrounding ice is weakened (such as by melting and thinning), this compressed air can fracture the cube.

Your ice cubes aren't exploding, they are laughing at you.

Not recently, but they used to. They would crack and pop and explode quite vigorously, and I would often have 2-3" sharp spikes of ice going straight up out of the cube when they came out of the freezer.

You should probably have your water checked for nitroglycerin.

I get the stalagmites sometimes.

First drink of the night, no injuries.

I had one pop open and shatter the glass. It was a very thin glass, though.

Kind of a depth charge effect, I guess.
