We're thinking of getting rid of Time Warner Cable and getting Dish.  We currently have cable, phone, and internet and pay about $120 a month.  We don't need phone anymore and would only hook up cable and internet.   We don't need a bunch of channels either.  Do you folks recommend Dish?  Thanks in advance for the replies.

We like Directv better due to Dish having a fucked up billing process that was never correct.  They billed us incorrectly several times and wanted to argue about it.

Been with Dish for over a decade in three different states.  Have never had a problem.

Hit the forums for Dish and Direct to see what's available from each.

I have Dish and like it a lot.

ETA:

People who work at Dish are on the Dish forum at the site posted above. If you have a problem, you can IM them and get personal service quick.

I don't believe Direct has anything like that. They can also let you know if you can get premium movie channels free or free PPV movies.

We had Dish for a few years, no real complaints.

Only problems we had (billing error and a dead DVR) were fixed quickly and painlessly.
eta: only reason we stopped our service is because we trimmed down our budget.

I have dish and like it.  The Hopper is really neat as it skips the commercials and has a sports app that let me create a folder for my favorite teams.

I worked at Exchostar Satellite, the uplink for Dish Network.  I now have Directv but wish I had Dish  Dish also carries GBTV which I wish I had.  They ran a free preview before the elction which leads me to believe they are conservative.  I know Charlie Ergen seemed conservative.

Dish offered me one priced and gave me another, even told me the recorded the lower price but they where sorry I was miss quoted. Fast foward two years trying to cut off Dish is crazy!!! they keep you hanging for hours then charged me $20 to send there crap back to them.

This.

Plus, as I have explained before, I think the people at Direct are liars and thieves.

Hopefully as inflation erodes away people's wages the first thing they will cut is TV so they don't hear the government propaganda anymore.

I had both Dish and DirecTV.  I prefer DirecTV.

- The customer service seems better.

- Better sports (NFL Sunday Ticket).

- The picture quality is better.

- More HD channels.

Dish would be better if you are looking for foreign language stations.  Their selections seems better.

Love my Dish, 5 years, 2 houses, never an issue... Other than them cutting AMC and walking dead but they fixed that.

Very happy with DirecTV.  If you go that way, let me know and I'll give you my account number.  That way we both get $10 off per month.

You probably don't even know of the experience that led me to that conclusion so how can you say that yours is 180 out?

Dish just dropped its yearly programming packages.  Pay for 11 months and get a year, so their prices just went up for me.  Really looking into streaming TV and using an antenna, saving some serious money.

I've been with Dish since 1996 when they launched their first bird.
I've been a satisfied customer ever since.
I prefer the Dish programming packages over Direct.

You pay for 11 months, get 12 months (i.e. 1 month free) but the price went up?

They are all thieves. That being said I left DirecTV after ~16+ years and moved to Dish. Programming I watched was available on both, bill was a good bit lower on Dish; even after the initial enticements both love to throw at you wear off. The Hopper smokes my HR20 DVR and the 4 sets of LNB's it chewed through. I'm sure the new DirecTV DVR is also good but I definitely have been pleased with the Hopper.

I just switched to Direct from having cable and so far love it. The genie box is pretty sweet. It can record 5 shows at once, recommends new shows and has a ton of features.

Our bill is 25$/month for the first year then it goes up the second year. Overall its way cheaper than cable for damn near the same package.

I hated dish with a passion. I would never suggest them to anyone. The service sucked, it was expensive for what you got. Bad weather? No TV. When its fucking raining out I want to be inside watching fucking TV.

Directv had a satellite go down several years back and they spent 10 days telling me the reason I couldn't get reception was my fault.  It was all over the news but they just denied it to me.  Switched to Dish and am pleased with it.

You are going to hear bad things about any cable/satalite provider.  I currently have Directv and have had few problems with them.  They do piss me off when they drop channels due to contract renewals and blame the channels for being greedy (i.e. FX, Comedy Central) but that may be par for the course for cable providers as well.  The billing is pretty straight forward, they have a good selection of sports channels although some of their packages are way too expensive.

I say if the price is right and they have the channels you want, go for it.
