Lots of active "music" threads right now:

How about famous rock bands that were the biggest disappointment in person?

I've seen a LOT of famous acts, many several times.  For me it is/was The Stones and, yes, Led Zep in about 1972.   The Stones really sucked, Zep was simply average.  Their vinyl was much better.

Primus.

Les Claypool was drunk as hell and ruined the entire thing.

We saw Lynyrd Skynyrd this past summer at an out door event in Richmond, and they were a really bad cover band of their former selves. I saw them before about 3 years ago and they were ok.

Also, I was in Las Vegas for a convention and saw  Paul McCartney at the MGM and it was pretty blan.

I have never seen a bad Stones show though.

+1,
But I saw all of mine in the 90's.
Never caught a 70's show.

I saw The Kinks on their 25th anniversary tour at the Mann Music Center in Philly, and they sucked ass.

I almost fell asleep watching Rage against the Soundgarden.

I kept waiting for Coldplay to do an Oasis or Radiohead cover.
They butchered Ring of Fire. They only knew the chorus.
Once the lead singer figures out he can replace the band with Casio, they'll be looking for work.

I've seen The Kinks several times.  Ususally a great show, but I did see one that they phoned in...

Olivia Newton John showed up at a CW show back in the 80's, used locals for a band, and only did about 4 songs because that's all they rehearsed.  Sucked big time. She was pretty much a zero.

Tom Petty got everyone to stand up while I'd paid for a seat up front due to a knee problem.  I wouldn't have complained if I'd paid to sit on the grass, but screw it!!  I got my money back and left, even though they swore it couldn't be done.   Never going back to that venue or promoter again.

the most recent Van Halen.
Eddie was sloppy, and his playing was less than imaginative.
The drum and bass solos from Alex's was average at best and Micheal Anthony
should have stayed out of the spotlight....and out of ear shot
Sammy was definately on his game, vocally strong and alot of stage presence.
Maybe it was the long lay-off????????

Don't laugh at me for seeing this, but in my defense they opened for Metallica:  Limp Bizkit.  All he did was bash the audience for being Texan just because we didn't give him loud enough applause.  He was all kinds of out of it and wandered around the stadium recruiting his next groupies while dedicating all his angry songs to Britney Spears.

Guns 'n Roses--1988 opening for Aerosmith

Only went to see GnR--I wasn't and still am not a big fan of Aerosmith.

But Axl was drunk--hell, the whole band was drunk.

They played one song, left the stage for like 15 mins, came back, played like two more, Axl got pissed at something, left again, and then only played one more.

They sounded like a train wreck.

Aerosmith was tight as tight gets-VERY kicks-ass live show.

Best rock concert performance ever:  Van Halen at Anaheim Stadium 1978, they were an opening act for Black Sabbath. They kicked Sabbath's ass!

Close second: Dire Straits at Irvine Meadows 1988.

Worst rock concert performance ever: Van Halen at the 1983 US Festival.
DLR was so drunk he was beyond stupid. He forget the words to his own songs.

End of 1970's high school rock music....

1978 at Cal Jam II.

Ted Nugent - was ok.
Aerosmith - SUCKED ASS, Probably didn't know what planet they were on.
Mahogany Rush - Rocked
Santana - FUCKING ROCKED
Dave Mason - SUCKED ASS
Foreigner - Worse than Aerosmith
Heart - Kicked ass
Bob Welch - Booed his stupid ass for his entire set

I went to their last tour also, it was way too loud and distorted.
Sammy always kicks ass. I've seen him three times, every time has been great.  Three years ago he toured with DLR and blew him off the stage.

+:  Freddy King, opened for Leon Russell who could only then try to pick up the pieces and clsoe the show.

Has Santana ever done a bad show?   Haven't heard of it.  The guy may be a lefty, but as a musician, he's a real pro.
