What's the best digital camera i can get for around $300? It needs to take SD cards and has USB.

Canon or Nikon.

I prefer cameras that run on AA batteries so I can use my own NIMH rechargables. It nakes it easy to bring spares.
I have canon A610. A little older. Great video and pics. Uses 4AA but is a little big.

Nikon makes some that run on 2 AA as well.

I'd look at a Canon Powershot S-5 IS.  You can find them brand new for as little as $280 these day.

my reply which I copied from another forum
You seriously will not find a better deal than this. Small - cigarette pack size almost-. The no AA battery is the best as it stays charged for ages and has little to no lag while waiting for the flash to charge again. I stay away from sony as a company so I have bias against them. For the price nothing beats it. Macro mode works well also. It is tiny which means you will be more apt to carry it more. Solid fit and finish after having used mine for a while.

Canon SD1000 7.1-Megapixel Digital Camera

I've always gone with the canons. Great images and colour. Good with image stabilization and small size. I prefer proprietary batteries now that I have used the canons. Very little if any charge up time between shots using the flash and it stays charged for a good 250-300 pictures. Charging takes about 3 hours. Easy menu, intuitive. I've owned the older 600 and now the new 1000. Very good pics indoor and outdoor. The AA camera are bulkier and tend to take longer charging between shots. You have to carry spares. With the proprietary just keep it with you and charge once a week or charge it up the night before you head out. Size is a little bigger than a cig pack or thick deck of cards I would say. You get an external battery only charger and spares are 40-45$ last I checked.

You can find this for 150 if you wait or look around.

edit: this is a pic taken indoors in a hotel banquet hall. Dim/low light is what decides a camera from me. Me and the cousin at a wedding. This is the older 5MP sd600 btw. Don't have anything handy on this comp. New one you won't notice a difference unless you look at the higher resolution sizes.

2nd edit: some green. I leave camera at 1600x1200 as this is adequate for how many pics you can cram on a 1GB card (1200 ) and quality. If I considered printing any I would use a higher res. I left this at orig size so you can see how it deals with greens and sunlight in top left. Also you can see how it focuses also.

edit for camera info
you can easily find this for 150-160$ so don't pay the 200$.

I wanted something with the larger SLR look/feel that I could grip better when out hiking or from my kayak .... point-and-shoot .....

Wanted higher optical-zoom (12x) and image-stabilization .....

I settled on the Kodak EasyShare Z8612 IS ....... USB connectivity and SD/SDHC/MMC memory cards or to 32MB of on board (internal) image storage ..........

I'm very pleased with it .....

Cost is about $225 ............ review/specs ............

Canon PowerShot G9 is nice and had my desired specs, but cost is about $450 ....

YMMV ...........

The review sites mentioned above are great, non-biased ways to find a great camera.

Check out the Panasonic Lumix series of cameras. They have Leica lenses and are head and shoulders above any other digital cameras that I have ever used, and I have used them all! Depending on size, I highly recommend the Panasonic DMC-FZ18. It is 8.1 megapixel with an 18x optical Leica zoom. It falls just under $300 online. The review sites also speak highly of this camera.

I spent several weeks doing my homework on just this question, and I bought this:

Panasonic DMC-TZ3

Got it on sale at Best Buy for 260.

I have owned many cameras, and many expensive cameras.  I have never been more happy than I am with the TZ3.  It is very nice for the money, has more features than most people will use, has excellent video capablilities for not being a video camera.

It's not as fast as some of my SLR cameras, and you will need to buy an extra battery because it tends to eat the little batteries after a few hours - but all small digitial cameras do.

+1

I too have a Panasonic & have been more than pleased with the amount of features & quality I got for a lot less $$$$ than other brands.

Also hit Wolf Camera web site for prices & options.
