Crossposting this from the small D3 beta thread we've got in the War Gaming forum, since I figure the denizens of GD would like to know, too.

Looks like Diablo 3 is going into open beta for this weekend.  Starting at 12:01PM PST today, April 20th and continuing till 10:00AM PST April 23rd, anyone with a battlenet account can play.  Here's a link to what you need to know about downloading the beta client and logging in once the servers open up (and then promptly crash when half of everyone tries to log in).

Unfortunately, even if you really stretch things out, explore every bit of the map, talk to every NPC, there's really only 3 hours or so of content in the beta.  Probably only 1-2 hours for each additional character you run through (unless you want to hear all the same background chat and lore again).  So, probably not any reason to go home early.

Except, of course, that it's Diablo 3!

Nope, no PKing.  There is no world PVP in D3.  Supposedly, they're adding an arena system of some sort, but they wanted to focus of the game to be on co-op and PVE.

Oh heck yes!

I'm kicking my son off the computer (Starcraft 2) this weekend to play D3.

He can go kill Nazi Zombies on his x-box, then again it would be cool to watch my 9 yr old son kill Devils and shit on Diablo 3.

the real money auction house is probably the reason why there is no pvp, no one likes pay to win games.

Personally, I'm a fan of the RMAH.  I look forward to actually making a couple bucks off all the time that I'm sure I'll be wasting on this game.

I had that error the other week when I got my key in the big wave they sent out.  Basically, it's some kind of issue with your credentials not properly propagating between the bnet servers and the D3 servers.  I had success with resolving the issue by changing account data (I changed my password then changed it back) which seemed to force an update to go through.  You may also need to check and make sure that you've chosen a battletag.  This was also posted on the forums, and may help explain some of the other errors that you might get:

Error 3003 - Click Options, under Account change your region to The Americas. The open beta is only being held on US hardware.

I got to actually beta-test the game, and beat the first four levels , or the entire beta on the first day of playing

Looks like another game thats being watered-down so that a retard can beat it,  sadly... just like the new Warcraft explansion (some bullshit with pandas...) is goin to do.

I bought it the other day when Newegg had it for $49.99.  The playable content of the beta is very tiny, maybe an hours worth the first time through, so don't rush it.  Your storage and gold is shared by account, so if you find good weapons for an alt you can stow it in town.

You must not be familiar with the Diablo series, or the new inferno difficulty.

Good sir.  You are what we affectionately refer to as a noob.  Please STFU.

Post a screenshot of your level 60 Inferno character that you are sure to have in the first two weeks of this watered down panda game.  I will buy you a membership if the screenshot is posted by May 29th.

Am I crazy or is there no skill tree?  Also, it's assigning attribute points automatically at level up.  There are no decisions to make in this game at all, and it's all being spoon-fed to me.  Did they trim things down for the beta, or is that how it really is?  If there's no decisions to be made on skills or stats, then every character of the same level will be exactly the same as every other character of that level, apart from gear.

Although, I have to say that it would be pretty fun for a little while, especially with a group, but I don't see it having anywhere near Diablo 2's staying power, unless there's stuff I haven't gotten to yet or that isn't in the beta.  Maybe the gear will be more varied and be able to make the characters more distinct.

I think runes took the place of skills that you actually get to pick.  But yeah, compared to D2, it seems to be really lacking in character development.  I know it's only the beta though, so maybe runes will actually get more complex and useful once you get past level 13.

To be honest, I think it's gonna get a mediocre reception when it's finally released.  It feels like Torchlight, which was fun, but was clearly a low budget indie ripoff of Diablo.  Diablo 3 shouldn't feel like a low budget indie ripoff of itself, but it kinda does.  It's just missing the atmosphere that the Diablo series is known for.

You really only had the illusion of choice in Diablo 2, after the theorycrafters got their hands on it.  Like I posted in the other thread:

Quoted:
If you were much into Diablo 2 beyond a casual level, you'd find that all Diablo 2 characters were basically the same as well.  You put enough points into strength to use the gear you needed, then basically the rest into vitality.  Skill tree points were basically the same, as well.  You were either optimal, or you were a noob.  If you fucked up and spent stats or skill points wrong, you were fucked and had to start the character over (till the later patches, when they added some limited respeccing).  There was also some really limited gear choices, regarding what was optimal vs everything else.

So, yes, stat-wise, two naked characters will have the same attributes.  However, with how they've done the skill and rune system, I think it should be much harder to find a 100% optimal/cookie cutter build, which should hopefully lead to more variety, customization, and experimentation (as you don't have to waste a respec or take a big risk with leveling up a character to see if an idea will work).

I think it's fine, but then, I'm obviously already excited about the game.

The higher level skill runes aren't always necessarily superior to the low level runes.  So, it's not like you're just sitting around waiting to get your max level skill rune.  They're supposed to be about the same in overall damage output, just different choices to use to make things fit your play style.

Took me all afternoon and evening to get in yesterday.  Played for about an hour, have a mixed 'Meh' on it.  It's Diablo, which is good and bad. I have played it and it's clones for 10 years now.  Yet, had they changed much, it wouldn't be Diablo.

Got back in a bit after noon.  Played for a couple hours, ran downstairs to get the mail, and came back to find Game Terminated.  Huh.

Anyway, after I got into the dungeons, my opinion of the game has risen considerably!  The graphics, especially the lighting, are pretty freaking awesome.  Lots of subtle things going on, water dripping, fog drifting through the air, etc.

As a Demon Hunter, there seems to be a lot of kiting and snaring going on.  I'm having fun with it, but I am curious to see how other classes play.

The Monk is pretty fun so far.  After a skill perk or two, your basic melee attacks have a little range to them.  Not much, but it's enough to let you stand a little off the bad guys if needed.  Kinda neat.

Sucks when you want to just play, though.

I just don't understand why you have to log into a remote server when you just want to play single-player or on in a private LAN game.  That irritated me so much when Starcraft 2 came out that I never even bought it.

I'm one of those old fashioned luddites who likes being able to play the single player version without an internet connection.  Plus the game doesn't feel that interesting.  Just seems like they reskinned D2 and dumbed it down immensely.  I know the online only is to prevent cheating, but I like having a life and I wanted a lvl 99, those two don't mix.

So far I have not been impressed, more like seriously let-down. I was expecting big things since it was a least a decade since D2, but I am very disappointed in what I am seeing so far.

This is a design choice they made a long time ago. That boat has long since passed.

ETA: In general, it doesn't appear that the Diablo 3 developers actually played much Diablo. They've made an assortment of claims about game design that are counter to very core design in Diablo 2. Things like "There wasn't actually any choice in Diablo 2" is complete ass. Yeah, 5 years after a game comes out people figure out that you only need X amount of strength to wear the best item for your character, but that's because the game is fucking OLD. Even then, you still had the choice of when to put points in to what skills and that molded your character as you developed it.

The Diablo devs, and most of the people playing Diablo still, suffer from WoW syndrome. They focus entirely on the end game where there character has X items that they already know about because the game is 10 years old and you know exactly what stats that character needs to be able to wear them and you'll metagame the shit out of it to min-max your character until you can get said equipment and then you'll waltz through the game like a dummie.

The Diablo devs have designed Diablo 3 in a way that demotes the rogue-like nature of Diablo and promotes the MMO aspects of the genre. They made a fundamental design failure when they announced that there weren't going to be any skill points in this game and then cited character uniqueness as the reason. You already had runes in place after you decided to do that. So, you said to yourselves "Boy, instead of giving everyone a ton of customization stuff and it will be even longer before people figure out what the best stuff is, lets remove one of the core elements of customization from the game and cite that we had to do this because we wanted character to be more unique."

Nah, all you've done is made it so I only need to make one character per class and only play through your game five times to fully experience it instead of the hundreds of times it would have taken me with your previous title.

I haven't followed any development news at all.  I'm not sure I'll be buying this one.  Maybe in the bargain bin.
