When I was a kid I remember recording my favorite songs from the radio onto cassette tape. To make matters worse we sometimes made "copies" of that tape for our friends.

When I got older I actually made compilation tapes from my records. To make matters worse we sometimes used our friends records or let them record ours.

VCRs came out and I used to record shows and movies from cable. To make matters worse we sometimes made copies for our friends.

Today a kid that downloads or shares a MP3 from the internet or copies a DVD is engaged in piracy.

I'm glad the RIAA didn't arrest me when I was a kid for making illegal tapes of AM radio.

Back when we were kids, there was no way for RIAA to track the trading of music. Now they can. That is a big part of it.

Not to back the RIAA in any way, but I think the distinction they will first make is that digital copies of digital music is indistinguishable, quality-wise, from the originals. Then they will say that tapig songs of the radio was illegal, too, and two wrongs don't make a right. Then they'll go on and on about how you're costing all these "artists" a fortune.

It's funny. I know a lot of local bands in KC actually encourage people to download their music for free and distribute it to folks. Seems the poorer a musician is, the more he just wants to have his music heard. The richer they get, the more they want to soak their fan base at every turn.

If you remember originally they were against taped copies and even time shifting via VCR's being made also. Home made tapes sounded/looked like home made tapes.  The difference now is that home made digital copies are as good as the originals. Thats why they are having a fit.

Look at it this way... if you work your ass off to make a product, (book, software, music, etc.), and somebody takes your work without paying for it, how would you feel about it?

Let's say you are a regular joe, and you come up with the next big "thing" and you really, truly believe that this "thing" will bring you some amount of income, possibly making your life easier (and that of your kids, family, friends, et al.) and about a week before you put it on the market to sell it - some fuking jackass loser steals your work, puts it on the internet and ruins your life, your work, your financial future!!!!

Making a copy of a cd that you own for personal use is one thing - the fucking bootleg pirates in china stealing everything from software, to music, to designer lables is unacceptable.

Sure, BMI, ASCAP, and SESAC may seem like a bunch of bullies, but the truth is, when any of us Arfcomers write, compose, and record an album - the last thing you want is for some fucking commie slave-labor fuck-wad to steal your work and your income!!!
