Well after 6 years as a detective I am going back to patrol as of 1/1/05. I have gotten a little rusty on my Def Tac training and want to attend a good school that will help get me up to speed. I am in Claifornia and do not want to travel out of state. I will have to pay for this out of my own pocket due to budget issues.

I like what I have read about the classes put on by Ken Good at Strategos but at $650.00 for five days it is a little expensive. Has anyone gone through this class? Was it worth it.

I have checked out wha t HSS is offering and it looks good as well but they are all one day classes and I think I want a little more than just one day. Anybody know anything about HSS or attended any of there classes?

Thanks guys.

Do you have any guys or gals you work with that are instructors?   If you were to tell them of your concern I would bet that they would go out of their way to go one on one with you for a bit.
We have a LT. from the SO  that does Saturday classes for women, assault victims.   He teaches the same stuff that you get in the academy.  No cost.   I go when I can and get to be thrown around and do the same.  I find that I have been able to react quickly and get out of some nasty stuff pretty easily.   Still sux when your partner pepper sprays and gets it on everyone though.
Budget always seems to get in the way.........
I have been to shooting classes out of my pocket but haven't gone to any hands on on my dime.

Just a thought.

Are you in Nor Cal or SO Cal?  I Have heard good things about HSS, but have never attended a course with them.  Maybe you could attend CSTI in San Lois Obisbo?  Its a 4 day officer safety update course.  Very good stuff!  I think it's listed on the post.ca.gov website.  If you are in the central coast area, I may be able to hook you up with an instructor to tune you up in the iterim.

Hope this helps.

to be profficient at DT it either has to be simple and natural, or you have to practice the techniques often.  $650 to me for 5 days sounds like a complete waste...you'll learn the techniques and never use em again and have forgotten them come months end.

Check some of your local martial arts centers (JuJitsu, Krav Maga).  I know locally one of them offers a rate of like 20 any time lessons for $100 or something.

One of my partners just went to the Strategos PCR class.  He has been to PPCT, ASP, and Controlled Force classes and said that PCR was by far the best class he's been to.  He also said that it was a physically intense class.
