IIRC there were some who ran to North Korea during the Vietnam era.  They weren't treated very well.

ETA: They went on foot, not in planes.

If there had been, we likely wouldn't have heard anything about it anyway. I doubt the govt would have stepped forward and released that as public info. Not very good for morale.

But I doubt this happened. Who'd wanna defect to a bunch of damn Commies anyway? I can understand why they (the Commies) would want to leave for a free nation however.
