Update 9/23 Pirate Cove- Ryan, Tayson, and Marco getting the last layers on the cove. We will begin adding rock mix in the next couple days.  Tiger Shark- Gisselle, Tallia, and Bailey fitting the sections of the body on the beam. Later in the day we decided we have some contour problems up front, and probably need to add some transition sections. Foam was delivered late, so we will start cutting those new sections today.  Earhart's crash site- The new notebooks got to the kids yesterday so we could branch off a bit with the project logs. The burlap is getting further along here.  F-4 Morgan and Beth working on getting the X and Y axis lines applied to the frames. We began cutting 1x2s yesterday that will clamp the frames on the main beam of our model.  Mermaid- Our mermaid is still going through skin tone changes. As the kids get further along, we are going back and reworking some areas, to add a bit more color variations. We had her down by the column so we could see how the coral formations would work with her attached to it.  More examples of how we are playing with making some of the linear coral formations.  We cut (a)  hole in the back of the neck of our mermaid to access her head, but after opening it up, we had to put a new one a bit higher in the skull. We need access to the eyes.  Hailey working on painting the backside of our mermaid.  Not sure I like how much green went away, but this is where we are with paiting.   Mermaid's tail- Emma, Gianreye, and Carter drilling holes in the tail for support. We will use 3 dowels to keep it rotating on the center dowel.  And then the bit came out inside the tail........  . Landon M working with forceps to get ahold of the bit.  It was in there further than they thought.....gravity didn't help. They eventually used a flashlight to find the end, and came in from the side, near the spray foam, and could pull it down with the forceps enough to get it loose.  Zip ties for the win!!!!  Adding foam over the top to transition to the tail fins.  |
We did a prelim fit of the tail to the body, and around the column today. The tail sticks out about 3/4 of the way into the hallway.  Last couple hours kids have been splitting the cross sections of the tail, and taking out portions to bend it tighter around the column, as well as cutting out some of our dowel that we spent so much time installing.  We think we can get away with what we have in there, but we may have to pull all of it and replace it with PVC pipe that has been pre-shaped into the curve. Not ideal. With the wire running all the way through the tail, I think we are going to be ok. The wire allows us to shape the tail, and still stay in one piece. We can also twist pieces so that the tail fits better to the contour we are looking for.

Also, yesterday we had an Art Teacher from Ten Sleep and some of her students come take a walk through tour. I think they were pretty impressed. It was awesome to see them get so excited. The teacher had some great questions about how we make this all work. She also searched and found this thread, so she could watch the progress. We discussed the incredible support you all have given us over the years, and the feedback you help us with as we are producing these installation projects. Anyway, it was fun to show another Art teacher what can happen thinking a little outside the box.

Big Horn Sheep update- I think Landon is getting close to done. I'm really loving this. A Big Horn Sheep sculpture using horns that have hung on our cabin for over 50yrs, in the Big Horn Mountains. Hopefully we can find a good display spot somewhere in our little A-Frame cabin.

When I look at the mermaid, I think "Painted Burlap" instead of "Seaweed". Colors are there, but the texture throws it way off. Can you put a finer weave fabric over the burlap, like Duck Cloth which is super cheap and a much finer weave, then you could cut that into both long and slender seaweed as well as the more lily pad shaped seaweed without the weave falling apart on the thin wavy stuff. Since she's mobile, coral wouldn't have to grow on her. Are Mermaids the witches that failed the sink test? Burlap would make a great base and you'd only have to do it over once then no ragrets.

Update 9/24 As I updated yesterday, we had to go back and look at our mermaid's tail position. We didn't have it curved radically enough to not fit out into the hallway. We took the pieces down to the display and set them up to confirm, to find out how off we were.    This is closer to what we need to see. The lexan fins will be shaped to wrap further, but you can see how off the torso and hips are from each other.  The hips need to be twisted, as well as more curved.   The tail is way too high, from where we want it to end.  Landon and Gianreye got right to work cutting sections and tightening the curve of the tail. Gianreye also identified what parts of the dowel we would not need for stability, and what we could remove to shape the lexan. He did a great job analyzing the problem and figuring out a solution.   This picture makes me laugh so hard. The kids were getting ready to slice the foam sections apart so they could be twisted, and some were making ready to heat up the lexan to curve it more. This was all at the same time. Emma is holding the heat gun facing her,  ..... she was just checking to see if it was in heat mode and not cooling, as she had just turned it "off" a few minutes earlier. She did a great job, along with Carter, getting the lexan to curve.  |

The kids feel differently. They specifically talked about how much they like the texture of her skin so far. I think it will "fit" a bit more as we combine it with the scales on the tail, along with the iridescent paint.

The mural gals have big plans for huge murals of aquatic life. We have 2 ships to build, 3 planes, and more sharks. That doesn't include the coral that we have just barely touched. So much left to do.

Having been a "safety" rep for a couple large companies I think if some outsider comes through doing a safety inspection the mermaid tail will get written up. Even your new position is sticking out way to far and would get written. You would be better off wrapping it closer to the pole and change her position so it's more in the breakout area and not in the travel hallway. All you would need is to have some students walking down the hall, not paying attention and running into the tail and getting hurt. Just my opinion and you know what opinions are worth. EBR |

EBR Oh, yeah, the pictures I took all have the tail way too far out. We never did get the tail wrapped around to the point we want. I've got some pictures to take that will show more work on curving the lexan and getting it closer to the position we need. In the end, we hope the tail fins are almost directly under the mermaid's toros. That is how far off we were.

Update 9/25 Frantic Friday Edition- Mermaid's tail- Here is where we began again this morning with the tail shape. You can see that we have gotten the lexan a little more curved. The tips still have a ways to go,  Addie and Tempie- Here is what it looked like as we got the first few feet of the tail adjusted and glued together. We ran a dowel rod up through the slices, to give it just a bit more support, as they hot glued all the sections back together again. We will add more slices to shim the places where we are creating gaps, then add spay foam.  We think when we continue the curve of the fin tips, inward, we will be set for how we want this eventually displayed. The pointed tips will be facing back into the column rocks, and not outward where anyone can run into them.  Deep Sea Diver- Chase and James added sand to the base yesterday. We got a little overzealous with the amount, but I think we can brush off the excess and see what it looks like, then reapply glue and add more sand.  Pirate Cove-Marco and Tayson got some of our rock mix on the pirate cove submerged rock.  Tiger Shark- We are finally at the point that we can start getting some real work done on the contours of our shark. Should be fun to watch this come to life.  F-4 - The fuselage of our Corsair is starting to fill out. Kids worked out the X axis and where each of the frames should land on it, to give the appropriate contours.  |
