Normally, I probably would be skeptical about the strategies being taught, but this guy was impressive and was able to explained why some of our strategies work some times and why they don't. Most of us think of it as "carrot or stick" but he was able to explain what really motivates people during the time when we approach kids about behavior. Really interesting. I was able to realize why I'm successful in many instances in my approach and where I could handle it better, and how to decrease my own stress from the behavior problems. Will be interesting to see how it works this year. Guy was really interesting to listen to. Not the normal type of In-service speaker. Update 8/19- Some crazy generous donations came in today!   Arcommers are the most generous group ever! The kids are always stunned to see the donations. They can't fathom how "strangers who live in other towns" want to help them.  Always fun to watch their reactions to these. He worked on the original dragon skeleton when he was a freshman, and then on the U-boat as a Senior. He is proudly wearing his "Electrical Engineer" U-boat shirt in one of the photos I shared. He majored in Computer engineering and graduated #2 in his class in H.S and at U.W. He now works for Raytheon Missile Defence in Tucson, AZ. He is lead on his project there. When he was a freshman at UW he mentored one of his friends who was a Senior working on our locomotive. Christian also went to U.W and majored in CE. He also now works for Raytheon. Many students have gone on to work at local Taxidermy studios. Not sure I can think of other stories right now. People ask me what I teach, and Art is what my title is, but I teach problem solving, patience, persistence, attention to detail, learning to take positive risks, and that failure is only part of the learning process on the way to success.

They'll probably wind up in management in short order. That is exactly why my son is in his position right now. He works well in teams, and is able to lead, not just be an SME.  So many young kids want to do something, but immediately give up when they don't succeed the first time. That is something that is not allowed to happen with these projects, or even my normal classes. Perfection is not realistic, and getting it right the first time, is rare. We fail all the time, the first time, sometimes, the 2nd and even 3rd times. The F-22 frame is a 3rd attempt. We had to scrap it entirely the 1st and most of the 2nd time. |

As we get going with our main projects, I also already have some side projects that I may steal a few kids to work on. Landon P. is back and was excited to get into one of my classes. That kid is a welding and fabricating genius, as well as an outstanding artist. I added new siding to my cabin this summer, and my wife decided that the Big Horn Sheep horns that had been hanging on the peak of the cabin for over the last 50yrs were not going back up. I hadn't looked at them that close, and am not a sheep expert, but once I got it down, it's pretty impressive. It's definitely weathered, and will need a little reconditioning, but we will leave them in their aged look, mostly. What I'd like to see Landon and a few others take on is using them to create a nice drift wood sculpture of a Big Horn Sheep. I played with AI to see if I could get a basic rendering. It didn't turn out very good, but my wife likes the idea. Not sure if I will be able to hang it inside our cabin or not. It's a small A-Frame, so wall space is limited, but it's going to be fun putting it together, and maybe the school will end up with it. We will see. This is what I'd like to see us make.....  We could buy a form and add to it, but I don't think it would turn out as well, as if I have Landon build a metal frame to hang the wood pieces directly on. This is the basic stance that I'd like to see us pursue.  Here are the horns sitting on my deck after I took them down.  Maybe what we might end up with? I saw several different animals done in a similar fashion at the Safari Club International convention and the Dallas Safari Club show, may have been the same artist at each show. One other booth had some mounts done with metal sculpture as well, just odds and ends put together randomly but with the end result in mind, sort of abstract but very cleverly done. |

They'll probably wind up in management in short order. x1000 I don't even think the things they learn from project management to how to hold something when gluing it and which glue works for which materials and a thousand other little things is just in their brain growing and sprouting and maybe a few make a "Maker" channel building stuff as a hobby to help this real job. Since we can't really track them (well, we shouldn't track them...  ), we can only get information volunteered back channelto the Boss art teacher who can share with us. But, just like my high school and college woodworking and metal shop teachers and learnings, the knowledge is invaluable and grows exponentially since it's getting those first seeds started and then you know how to forge weld or arc weld or tig weld for your problem, and what equipment you have. Same goes for turning a new leg for a chair that broke and things like that which are just something you I know, like common sense. Guns' students seem to be the only ones learning real world "Maker" common sense in his zip code, but I can pretty much guarantee you other art teachers saw at least one of the write ups, like the president did, and are trying to get something started on donations but still starting small. He's the leader and hopefully there are many followers and maybe even another Unique Art Teacher sprouting. The hardest part will be getting a metal shop and wood shop at the school before expanding the art program, unless you want to go full Guns style and have more tools than the wood department and just say "you guys are too slow" and do his own thing. |

Update 8/21 It's a short day for us today, so we won't get much done today. Kids will watch a Ladder Safety video and we will go over some basic classroom expectations today. Some of my Advanced kids might get some of the items in our Amazon list narrowed down a bit, so we can get them ordered. When we get a little further into this, I'll get you guys a link to the list if you'd like to help us out that way. |

Update 8/24 I spent money for the first time this year, so I thought I would continue to let people know approximately how much this project has cost up to date. It went quick.....  + I ordered 5 gal of paint, rollers, trays= $300 + 2 sheets of foam  , 2 sheets of plywood, 7- 2x4s, 4- 2x2s, 5-1x2s= $300_____________________________________________________________________________ total as of 8/24/26 $600 |

Update 8/24.2 Kids got into groups today and started taking measurements , and brainstorming what they would like to see in each area. Love how much enthusiasm there is when we begin. So cool.   Many faces should look familiar here..  Hayden and Riley deep in discussion about how the Arizona might look.  Cambree and Kaylen, 2 or my team leaders back again.   Matt and The Great Dane....... Looking forward to the F-4.

Though I guess the walls don't have to sit outside under the sun, get pelted with gravel and al sorts of chemicals then washed then frozen and repeated. Walls have it easy. Is that the low end or mid range sherwin williams and do you use the matte, eggshell or satin? I'm pretty sure it's not gloss. |

It rolls nice for the price and is what they recommended. This is for the walls, of course. For some of the projects. We will buy the more expensive options if needed. |

Update 8/25 Paint is on the wall, saw dust is flying.......and frantic measurements are happening. We are planning on having a full 1/1 scale Tiger shark. The girls are working out sizes and how much of our shark we can fit on the wall above our diver.  Jim, Beth and Sawyer all working on scaling the F-4. We decided 1/3rd scale would best fit in the display. We considered 1/2 scale for a bit, but that is pretty big for just one corner of the room.  Landon P went down to work on the F-22.....again..... actuating arm broke again..... then he started working on the rolling base that our diver will stand on. He wasn't able to work on the sheep today, as the welding shop was closed during a lecture in there.  Paige and Taylor working on adding some darker blue to the corner of the room. We will add this color is several spots before starting other lighter values of blue and blue/green into the composition.

And now...... HOLY CRAP!!!!!!! Vortex Optics and @VortexSam just dropped a bomb on us.......a Vortex Christmas Bomb!!!!! Sam, thank you so much!!!! This is awesome. Watching the girls geek out over the spotting scope was too cool. I figured with how generous Vortex Optics was with us, sending a check for $1,000 this fall, there probably wouldn't be any prizes for this year's T-shirt fundraiser raffle..... I WAS WRONG!!!!!!! It was too funny trying to keep the girls from opening the box too early. THEY WERE INCREDIBLY EXCITED. I've got more girls who hunt in that particular class than boys. Their eyes were huge as we opened the box.  In the box there were Vortex stickers......I had to remind them, they would be in a drawing for students later, and a bunch of really nice Vortex Hats. There was probably 20 of them, I need to go count. There were 3 Pairs of Diamondback 12x50 binoculars!!!!!! AND......... Wow!!!!! a Vortex Diamondback 16-48x65 spotting scope!!!! As we did last year, some hats, stickers and one pair of the binos will go to an art student raffle, and the remaining hats, 2 pairs of binos and the Spotting scope will be raffled off to ARFCOM members who buy shirts or hoodies from our fundraiser.

Looking back, the internet has made things so much easier, and for the students who want to learn, the avenue is there to find the information and learn hands on from STEM to languages to Art. the way Richard Feynman said that all textbooks for all classes are junk, they've removed problem solving and hands on learning how to find solutions and replaced them with being able to regurgitate memorized lists without knowing what the words even mean. And that was around 1970, and books are far worse with the "teach to the test" mentality and only needing to remember the right word or formula, rather than understand the word from lain roots or the formula by educated guesses as to what is needed then try deriving from first principles if it isn't recalled quickly. I honestly fondly remember my Metal and Wood shop teacher (high school) and all sorts of metal and wood classes in college (another single man who kept me in university). I think I got more from them than in some of the electronics classes, Art was even ahead of a couple of the lower end electronics classes for breaking new mental territory. So with all that said, I am sure that all the students who kept their grades up and went through all their years in your art class WILL have a much better time at life. Everything from designing to cutting to cleaning up work area each day. Then you go into robotics which wasn't an option when I was in Jr High metal/wood shop and no teacher would have had time to do anything near the scale of what you're pulling off repetitively! It will be a great loss to the students when you retire (at least all the coves will be full). Replacement has some giant shoes to fill and needs to know bout tinkering and projects as much or more than the art basics, but needs to have an artistic mind that has broken into the technical area as well. The only hope he would have would being adopted by us or some other form if he's a good teacher (ensure basics are understood and have students discover answers for themselves instead of repeating a word they don't the know the meaning of). In short - not one of the Big City Thinkers, like the art teachers that petition get a school banned from the contest because they're too good and sweep nearly all the top trophies in many categories, in addition to lots of lower place slots, rather than trying to improve on their own they have to bring others down, like an HOA. As we did last year, some hats, stickers and one pair of the binos will go to an art student raffle, and the remaining hats, 2 pairs of binos and the Spotting scope will be raffled off to ARFCOM members who buy shirts or hoodies from our fundraiser. |
