i use dvd fab to decrypt then dvd shrink if it's still too big. both will burn the disc when you're done.

For movies, I recommend  DVDFab  (down load the trial version from a reputable source) and then, I've  *heard* you could search on YouTube for that programs name and there might just be a video with a user name/serial number/ to make it run in full version

I like that ^^ because you can put in a movie, basically does everythingfor you, then you decide it you want to keep the movie a perfect copy (dual layer dvd if your computer can burn those)@(100%)  or have it automatically compress it down to fit on a cheap dvd (usually 55-70% quality)

Need codes for those programs after the trial expires.

AnyDVD is an awesome program, it's worth paying for it.  I bought it once and have gotten free upgrades for years, it's a tremendous value and works very well for what it does.

To actually rip, I'm partial to DVDShrink.  In conjunction with AnyDVD, you get the best un-DRM program available and then DVDShrink is a very easy to use way to actually do the ripping.

Just buy'em. Worth it if you're going to keep using it. I've used these for years. It always works, they are always updating it and will do Blu-ray.

Alright!  I've posted about this in other threads, so I'm just going to do a cut and paste.

Ok, Here we go.

Both DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter have already been mentioned and they are both good programs.  However, neither of them have been supported in years, so they can't handle the newer encryptions that are be used on newer dvds.  There are two rippers that I use that are still being supported.  AnyDVD and DVDFab.  AnyDVD (I use 99% of the time) has a 21 day free trial.  DVDFab has several version but the decryption feature will always be free.  Using either one of these programs will rip your dvd to your harddrive as it removes all of the encryption.  One thing that I really like about AnyDVD is that it decrypts on the fly.  That means that you can use programs such as DVD Shrink and Handbrake and they will see your DVD in the drive as being unencrypted.  Once you decrypt your dvd, you can then use DVD Shrink or DVD Rebuilder to shrink your dvd so it can be backed up on a single layer DVD-R/+R disk.  When I first started out backing up my dvds I used DVD Shrink, but now I use DVD Rebuilder almost exclusive.  DVD Shrink is a transcoder while DVD Rebuilder is a encoder.  A transcoder removes data to shrink the video whereas DVD Rebuilder re-encodes the video.  All that means that at higher compression amounts DVD Rebuilder will have better picture quality that DVD Shrink.  The trade off is that DVD Rebuilder takes alot longer to work.

Handbrake will re-encode you dvds into .mp4 or .mkv video files using the H./X.264 codec.  I've gotten good results converting movies to .mkv files as small as 550 mb that look almost as good as the original dvd video.

Boy, I'm glad I didn't have to type all of that again.

I use DFD43 to handle the decryption and VOB2MPG to convert to an MPG.  This maintains the full quality.  I can then stream them to my TiVo and not mess with disks anymore.

AnyDVD and CloneDVD are worth the purchase if you're going to do a bunch of ripping/burning. I used to use DVD Shrink and it was much slower.

Do shrink  and DVD decrypter and the others mentioned (from XP days) work on Win 7?

I've been using Handbrake.  I use DVD43 to crack the CSS encryption.   Works great!

I'm not outputting for a mobile device, so I use a large file size in an MKV container using h.264.  Primarily I use XBMC on a nettop computer to watch movies on my LCD TV.   Works great.  The output file seems to have the same video quality as the source.

I have read on Afterdawn.com that some people have had some problems with Win 7, but for the most part there haven't been any problems with Win 7.

This.  Bought the bundle over 4 years ago...imo its the best.  CloneDVD with AnyDVD has never let me down and is ridiculous easy to use.
