Could someone point me to some (preferably freeware, or relatively inexpensive) software for burning video .mp4's to DVD for viewing in a normal DVD player?
All the ones I've found only burn from .avi's, and a lot of quality is lost in changing formats multiple times. TIA, - AG |

I had a similar problem and got lots of good responses here.
The one that worked the absolute best (and I downloaded nearly all that were suggested) was DVDfab 6. You'll get a trial version that's good for several weeks, after which you have to purchase it. I'm sure there's a completely free "cracked" version, but I only needed it for a couple days so I didn't bother. Google DVDfab6. FWIW, I tried imageburn, I tried Roxio v.9, and 2 others before I used the DVDfab. None of them worked properly. Only DVDfab read the VOB files and worked properly on a DVD player. |

I have not had it fail ever. The only thing it will not do is make an .iso out of a Full Disc DVD9 backup from the HDD. I saved 3 DVDs that way before I knew you could save as an .iso. I also had a audio sync problem on a Blackberry. Just needed to do a cstom setting and it worked fine. |
| Youcan download it and use it free for a month http://dvdfab.com |

There are DVD players that will play DIVX, XVIC and MP4 formats.
Then you just burn a disc in UDF mode with the data files. Works fine. Trying to convert from a very lossy compressed low bitrate format back to dvd resolution and whatnot is a waste not only of DVD discs, but of time and money. Spend $60 on a DVD player that will pay the formats natively and you won't regretit. (Having entire seasons of your favorite shows on a single disc will help too). |

Looks like it's only $40 after discount. That's not bad if it works well. I am in to Blu-Rays now, wonder what the going rate is on a burner. |

It appears that dvdfab does the exact opposite of what I need... it coverts from DVD to a format useable on an iPod or such. I have the opposite problem. I have a .mp4 files that I want to watch in a normal player... - AG Again, for the price of a couple sleeves of DVDs, you can buy a DVD player that simply plays MP4 format discs. Heck, for $200 you can build an internet appliance for your video using sesamTV or a similar app to navigate. Or you can, you know, just get the Audio / Video cable for your IPOD and play things on the TV that way. |

DVD's would just be easier. - AG |

Put simply, I'd rather insert large things sideways wi... In other words, I'd rather buy the DVD. Check the used sections around town. |

The thing is, MP4 has already been compressed all to shit and its really reduced in terms of frame size too. I suppose you could take your MP4, run it though an avisynth conduit into TMPGenc, encode to 352x480 mpeg2, 48k sound, and then use an authoring program to get it onto a DVD. But honestly, at that point the quality is going to be SO bad.... |
